As the weather gets colder, skin can start feeling tight, rough or flaky. Maintaining a summer established routine may not be adequate during the winter. In such a situation, many people resort to Aloe Vera gel or rose water for a quick refresh of hydration.

Both will be light weight and easy to use, but they will provide different advantages. Aloe Vera gel is typically the better choice for the soothing and hydrating properties that can be beneficial in winter skin. However, neither can be used to replace a moisturiser that will keep moisture in. The choice will be different depending on the skin type, how dry it gets and which ingredients your skin can handle.

Aloe Vera Gel Vs Rose Water: What Is The Difference?

Dr Karuna Malhotra, Cosmetologist, Skin Specialist and Founder, Advanced Skin Clinic, New Delhi explains, “Neither is a complete winter skincare answer on its own. Aloe vera gel and rose water are both light, water based products. Winter dryness needs something that also locks moisture in.”

Aloe vera gel and rose water are both lightening hydrators, with different uses. Aloe vera gel can soothe mild irritation and can be used to add moisture to skin while rose water is primarily used for freshening up skin. Neither can be a substitute for a moisturiser, particularly in the winter when the skin is likely to be dry.

Why Does Your Skin Need Extra Care In Winter?

Skin may feel dry due to cold air, low humidity, and indoor heating and long and hot showers. These ailments may cause a breakdown in the skin barrier, which is the topmost layer that helps to keep water in and irritants out.Rose Water Vs Aloe Vera Gel for skinRose Water Vs Aloe Vera Gel for skin

A 2021 Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology review explains that moisturisers replenish skin barrier components and decrease the amount of water lost through the skin, transepidermal water loss. That's why a moisturiser after application of a light gel or mist is more beneficial than using one without.

Dr Malhotra explains that aloe vera gel can provide hydration and soothe mild irritation, but it does not seal moisture into the skin. Rose water can refresh the face, although its effects may be short-lived in dry winter air.

The key is to choose a product your skin tolerates and apply a suitable moisturiser afterwards. This helps reduce moisture loss and supports the skin barrier during colder weather.

Which One Is Better For Your Skin Type?

Dr Malhotra advises to go by the needs of your skin and not by a global skincare routine which may not fit every skin type.

  • Dry skin: If you have oily or acne prone skin, you may prefer to look for an aloe vera gel that is light and won't leave a greasy film on your skin. If you can bear it, you can use rose water as an optional step to refresh your skin.
  • Flaky skin: Both products can be applied on slightly moisturized skin, then a more nourishing skin cream. Both are necessary but not sufficient.
  • Combination skin: Apply aloe vera gel to oily spots and cream to dry skin of the cheeks.
  • Oily, acne-prone skin: Avoid skin care products containing alcohol. Stop if you notice itching, burning or redness.
  • Cracked skin or eczema: Do not apply gels or scented mists to an eczema or broken skin. A mild moisturizer that the healthcare professional recommends is a better choice to start with.

With mild windburn, aloe vera gel could be soothing, but if the redness, pain or damaged skin persists, it is necessary to give it the right treatment.

How To Use Aloe Vera Gel Or Rose Water In Winter

You don't have to use both items or incorporate multiple additional steps into your skin care regimen. Keep it simple:

  • Use a mild facial cleanser and lukewarm water to wash your face.
  • If your skin can tolerate it, apply a little aloe vera gel or rose water.
  • Use a moisturiser while the skin is still wet.
  • Apply sunscreen in the winter, all year long.
  • Steer clear of hot showers and bar soap, which may exacerbate dryness.

If you find that your skin feels tight after applying a product, discontinue its use and reevaluate your skin care regimen. If there is itching, cracking or inflammation that lasts, it may require the help of a dermatologist.

Which One Should You Choose? Aloe Vera Gel Or Rose Water?

Aloe vera gel is generally the more practical choice if you want lightweight hydration and a soothing feel. Rose water is better treated as an optional refreshing step rather than a solution for winter dryness. The most important step is to apply a suitable moisturiser afterwards, because keeping moisture in the skin matters more than choosing between two water-based products.

FAQ

  • Can I apply aloe vera gel and rose water together?

If both are tolerable, you can use them in the same routine. Apply the first, then the second and lastly a moisturiser if necessary. Both are not necessary and discontinue their use if either irritates you.
  • Will my skin care regimen need to change when the season turns to winter?

Not necessarily. If your skin feels comfortable, you don't need to do too much. If it's tight, flaky or itchy, change to a milder cleanser, use a more moisturising product and don't take long, hot showers. Make any necessary adjustments to the routine based on the reaction of the skin.
