5 Ways to Spot The Difference Between Real and Fake Aloe Vera Gel

Aloe Vera gel is a favourite ingredient of many for treating skin problems, but using fake or adulterated one can cause harm. Our experts explain how to identify pure Alow Vera gel

Whether it is a hair problem or skin irritation, Aloe Vera gel is regarded as one of the best remedies for most dermatological issues. Aloe vera is primarily known for its cooling, moisturising, and healing effects, but not all aloe vera gels available in the market are pure. As dupes and adulterated forms of almost every product have become common in the market, it is always better to check if the product you are purchasing is original or not.

Using fake aloe vera gel can cause irritation or even lead to various allergies, which highlights the importance of understanding the difference between the real and the counterfeit. To gain insights about the same, we spoke to Dr Ruben Bhasin Passi, Consultant Dermatologist, CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram, and Dr Umashankar Sharma, Medical-In-Charge, Kailash Institute of Naturopathy, Ayurveda & Yoga. Continue reading to know what both of our experts shared.

Identifying Pure Aloe Vera Gel

Recognising pure aloe vera gel is a prerequisite for getting the most out of your skincare routine and avoiding irritation from additives and synthetic fillers. Speaking about the same, Dr Passi notes, "I usually recommend that patients consider exactly what the product is made of, because aloe vera is most effective when it is least processed and completely devoid of harsh chemicals." Dr Sharma also emphasises on some factors one must consider before purchasing the Aloe Vera.

1: The Ingredients List

The very first step in choosing a gel is to read the ingredient list closely. A pure aloe vera gel will list Aloe barbadensis leaf extract or juice as its primary ingredient. It should be the most prominent component with very few others. Avoid products that contain alcohol, artificial fragrances, synthetic colours, or parabens; these ingredients can irritate the skin and diminish the healing power of the aloe, which is the main reason people with sensitive or acne-prone skin use it.

2: Colour and Texture

Texture and colour play a significant role in identification. Pure aloe vera gel is either colourless or slightly translucent and has a light, natural consistency. Gels that are bright green or overly thick and sticky usually indicate that the product contains dyes, thickeners, or chemical stabilisers.

3: The Scent

As experts recommend, the smell should be very faint and fresh. A strong or perfumed scent typically means that artificial fragrance has been added to mask the absence of natural aloe or the presence of chemicals.

4: Dermatological Certification

Another reliable method is to look for quality and safety certifications. Products that have undergone dermatological testing or possess recognised quality standards are generally safer for daily use. Along with this packaging also has its role as air-tight and opaque containers help maintain the active compounds in the aloe and prevent contamination.

5: The Patch Test

Even after checking the label, if you are still unsure, a patch test is the best way to verify safety. Apply a small amount to your hand, neck, or a small portion of your cheek and wait for 5 to 10 minutes. This will help you determine if the product causes irritation and itching, or if it provides the expected cooling and moisturising effects.

What To Look For?

Dr Passi advises, "Look for simple formulations with minimal preservatives and clear labelling, such as batch numbers and quality assurances. Using pure aloe vera is beneficial for maintaining healthy skin and preventing adverse reactions." When pure aloe vera gel is chosen and used correctly, it hydrates the skin, calms inflammation, and assists in healing.

Dr Sharma adds, "Freshly extracted aloe vera gel from the plant is the most unadulterated form available. If you are using fresh gel, ensure the yellow latex layer (aloin) is completely removed, as it can be highly irritating to the skin. A simple patch test is always a good idea before applying any gel to your face."

Bottomline

Aloe Vera gel is a versatile solution for skin problems ranging from acne to dry skin and tanning. Due to increasing demand, new brands frequently enter the market, making it hard yet necessary to identify dupes. However the good part is that by following the above mentioned methods one can easily differentiate between an original and a fake product.
