Expert Says THESE Plants Are the Ultimate Home Health Boosters

In today's busy, high-tech world, we spend a big portion of our time indoors. But your home or office doesn't have to be a stale, lifeless box. Imagine being able to easily brighten your mood, reduce stress, and even breathe cleaner air, all by introducing a little bit of green. It may sound too good to be true, but studies suggest that just having plants present is a great pick-me-up for your health and happiness. Bringing the outdoors in accesses our deep inner bond with the earth.

We consulted with Shrey Kumar Srivastav, Senior Consultant and General Physician at ShardaHospital - Noida, and he shared with us the perfect, easy way to make your space a serene, energetic oasis.

Plants One Should Keep For Better Health

According to Dr Srivastav, there are five easy, effective and beautiful plants to help you do just that:

1. Snake Plant (Sansevieria trifasciata)

Nicknamed 'Mother-in-Law's Tongue,' this tough plant is one of the best air purifiers to keep indoors. One of the only houseplants that will produce oxygen at night, it makes a great bedroom choice. It removes typical household poisons such as formaldehyde and benzene from cleaning supplies and furniture.

Easy Care Tip: “Neglect is its speciality! Only water when the soil is absolutely dry, and it tolerates low light, although it prefers bright, indirect light,” suggested Dr Srivastav.

2. Aloe Vera (Aloe barbadensis miller)

Aloe vera is not just a pretty plant with pretty leaves; it is an instant, living first-aid kit. The transparent gel contained in its leaves can be applied directly to the skin to soothe minor burns, cuts, and scrapes. “Aside from being medicinal, this plant cleans the air of many common airborne toxins,” he added.

Easy Care Tip: Situate it in a bright window (it adores bright light) and water thoroughly but rarely, letting the soil dry out completely between waterings.

3. Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum)

With its dramatic white flowers and dark green leaves, the Peace Lily is a stunning addition to any room. It's great at eliminating toxins such as ammonia, formaldehyde, and benzene. It also has a natural humidifying effect on the air, which can benefit dry skin and respiratory problems.

Easy Care Tip: It prefers low to medium light and will famously droop its leaves when it's thirsty, making it easy to know when to water.

4. Lavender (Lavandula)

Known for its calming scent, having a Lavender plant indoors (or dried lavender) can have a direct, beneficial effect on your mental health. Research indicates that its scent can assist with stress relief, decrease heart rate, and improve sleep. Put it in your bedroom or a quiet reading corner.

Easy Care Tip: Lavender requires full bright light to flourish indoors, preferably a sunny windowsill. It prefers a draining potting soil and should only be watered when the soil is dry.

5. Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum)

With its fountain-like leaves and small spiderette branches, this popular, low-maintenance plant is one of the best for removing indoor air pollutants, such as carbon monoxide. And simply looking after a plant and watching it thrive can lower stress levels and boost well-being.

Easy Care Tip: They can deal with a range of light conditions but like bright, indirect light. They forgive you if you miss them a miss sometimes, and are also relatively harmless to pets.

Bottomline

You don't need a green thumb to appreciate the benefits of plants. By introducing these five green guardians into your home, you're not only adorning, you're investing in a simple yet potent way in fresher air, a clearer mind, and overall wellness.

FAQ

  • Q1: In what ways do indoor plants really benefit my health?

A1: In two key ways: physically, by removing prevalent indoor air pollutants (such as formaldehyde) and adding moisture; and mentally, by lessening anxiety, enhancing mood, and enhancing focus through their soothing presence.
  • Q2: Will the oxygen released from the plants have a significant impact on my room?

A2: Although a high quantity of plants is required to make a noticeable difference to the oxygen content of an entire house, the plants (particularly the Snake Plant) actually do give off oxygen, and the general impact on air quality and your mental health is palpable and positive.
  • Q3: Are the plants difficult to maintain?

A3: No, the plants mentioned (Snake Plant, Aloe Vera, Spider Plant, Pothos, Peace Lily, and even Lavender) are highly low-maintenance and forgiving and are perfect for beginners or those with no time.
