A case-control study in the Journal of Renal Nutrition states that balancing protein intake with alkaline-rich foods, such as fruits and vegetables. It can significantly mitigate these risks by neutralising the acid load and restoring mineral balance in the urine. For those with a history of stones, the researchers suggest that moderating animal protein is a critical dietary intervention for long-term prevention.

Traditionally, patients were advised to avoid high-oxalate plants like spinach. However, this research shows that a balanced plant-based diet is beneficial because it is naturally rich in magnesium, potassium, and citrate, which stop crystals from sticking together.
