Dry air of winter takes a heavy toll on our skin, but the area most affected and frequently overlooked is our hands. As the temperature drops, our hand skin starts losing moisture, appearing dull, dry, and aged. Being in constant use for almost every task, they require extra care and protection.
The hands are one of the first places that are likely to exhibit the effects of winter and ageing, says our expert, Dr Veena Praveen, Head Medical Advisor (South) and Consultant Dermatologist at Kaya Limited. Speaking with the editorial team of Onlymyhealth, Dr Praveen shares simple ways to restore the softness and strength of our hands.
Why Do Hands Age Faster in Winter?
The hands have naturally thinner skin, fewer glands that secrete oils, and are constantly in contact with cold air, low humidity, high levels of washing, and chemical irritants," explains Dr Praveen. These processes damage the skin barrier, causing the loss of moisture, roughness, and the appearance of fine lines and fragility. With the reduction of collagen and elastin that comes with age, the hands become soft and weak, and they tend to look older than the face in most cases.

The low temperatures in cold weather reduce the humidity level in the environment, making the skin lose water faster, whilst indoor heating further dries the surrounding air. "This mixture interferes with the lipid barrier, which keeps the skin soft," Dr Praveen notes.
The problem exacerbates with repeated exposure to soaps, sanitisers, and hot water, which strip away the natural oils, leading to irritation, redness and, in extreme incidents, painful cracks. Cumulative damage over time prevents rapid repair of the skin and leads to pigmentation and visible ageing.
The Foundation of Barrier-Based Care
Restoring strength starts with protecting the skin's natural barrier. Here are a few practices she advises to follow:
- Light washing is necessary because harsh soaps will worsen dryness.
- Using light, unscented cleansers ensures the skin's natural pH is not disrupted, lessening irritation.
- Use lukewarm water instead of hot water to wash hands.
- Pat the hands dry instead of rubbing them to prevent additional damage.
- Wearing gloves during cleaning or when exposed to cold weather is a vital protective measure to prevent moisture loss.

Simple Ways to Enhance Winter Hand Care
The key to winter hand health is regular and sufficient moisturisation. Dr Praveen recommends looking for specific ingredients, "Humectants such as glycerin, ceramides, and urea, along with emollients like shea butter, are essential. These rich creams attract and hold moisture while repairing the destroyed skin barrier." For a deeper recovery, Dr Praveen also suggests:
- Apply a thick hand cream before sleep.
- Wear cotton gloves overnight after applying cream to lock in moisture and hydration.
- Even in winter, ultraviolet rays cause pigmentation and collagen breakdown, making the use of Sunscreen crucial.

Advanced Treatments for Ageing Hands
Dr Praveen underlines that for cases where hands show definitive signs of ageing, such as deep lines, thinning skin, or decreased volume, aesthetic dermatology can supplement topical care.
"Non-invasive procedures, such as skin boosters, inject the superficial layers with hydrating components like hyaluronic acid to enhance elasticity. Other non-surgical anti-ageing treatments can stimulate collagen synthesis to make the skin stronger without changing its natural appearance," she states.
Bottomline
The health of your hand's skin is also affected by internal factors, and apart from external care, it also needs the goodness of a healthy diet, hydration, and overall well-being. As Dr Praveen mentions, through regular preventive measures, correct hydration, and professional care where necessary, dry and rough hands can soon regain their charm and become soft and strong even in winter.
