Condoms are meant for protection against unwanted pregnancies and STDs. But its function is not just limited to this. In fact, condoms are multifaceted. In today’s world, there are too many varieties of condoms available in the market – each serving a different purpose. Dotted condoms are one such, which are said to enhance pleasure during sex. But how much truth is there in this belief? Can a ribbed condom actually make intimacy more intense? Are there any risks attached to it? Today, we will answer all these questions for you.
To get an expert view on this, we reached out to Dr Chetna Jain, Director Dept of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Cloudnine Group of Hospitals, Sector 14, Gurgaon. Read ahead.
Do Dotted Condoms Actually Enhance Pleasure?
First things first, do dotted condoms heighten pleasure during intimacy? As per condom manufacturers, ribbed and dotted condoms are designed in such a way that they will increase pleasure. They claim that textured condoms may stimulate nerves in the vagina, which may heighten pleasure. Textured condoms are believed to create more sensations that may feel enjoyable during anal sex. For the wearer, arousal caused by friction from the condom or their partner’s heightened arousal may make intimacy more intense and enjoyable. But we ask our expert whether these claims have any truth attached to them or not.
“Yes, dotted (ribbed or textured) condoms are designed to enhance sexual pleasure, especially for the partner being penetrated. The raised dots or ribs create extra friction, which may increase stimulation and arousal for some people. However, pleasure is subjective — while some find them enjoyable, others may feel discomfort or overstimulation,” answers Dr Jain.
Apart from ribbed, there are a number of other condom features that may enhance intimacy. Some of the options are:
- Lubricated condoms – They minimise the need for lubricants, but may cause allergic reactions.
- Spermicide or nonoxynol-9 coated condoms – These provide extra protection against pregnancy; but have the potential to irritate skin.
- Flavored condoms – They can make oral sex more enjoyable. But experts suggest that these should not be used for vaginal sex, as they increase the risk of yeast infection.
- Warming condoms – These may contain capsaicin, which creates a pleasurable warming sensation, but has the potential to cause skin irritation.
- Novelty condoms – They come in a variety of shapes, colors, and sizes; some of these even glow in the dark’ but these condoms aren’t approved for STI or pregnancy prevention.
- Ultra-thin condoms – They are thinner than the usual ones. They are said to increase sensation, but may have a higher risk of breaking.
Benefits And Side Effects Of Dotted Condoms
As per a data from World Health Organization, condoms have had a significant impact on the global HIV epidemic: model simulations have estimated that increased condom use since 1990 has averted approximately 117 million new HIV infections. Thus, it is given that condoms, in general, are highly beneficial – when it comes to maintaining overall sexual wellbeing. On this note, Dr Chetna shares the pros and cons of using dotted condoms.
