Multivitamin gummies have become immensely popular among fitness enthusiasts. These tasty alternatives are preferred by individuals who struggle to swallow traditional, chalky supplement pills. But since they taste like candy, people often wonder whether they really have any nutritional benefits or are just sugary treats.

To clear up the confusion, our experts, Ms Veena V, Chief Clinical Dietician and HOD, Department of Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics, Aster Whitefield and Dr Sandeep Bhatnagar, Senior Director and HOD, Internal Medicine, Paras Health Udaipur, break down the facts and share the benefits and hidden risks of gummy vitamins.

Are Multivitamin Gummies Effective or Just Candy?

Ms Veena says that multivitamin gummies are not just candy, but they are not a replacement for a healthy, balanced diet either. “They can be beneficial for people with specific nutrient deficiencies, restricted diets, older adults, or those with increased nutritional needs,” she adds.

The expert further explains, “However, many gummies contain added sugars and may provide lower amounts of certain vitamins and minerals compared to traditional tablets. They should be taken only in the recommended dosage, preferably after consulting a healthcare professional. The best way to meet your nutritional requirements remains a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats, with supplements used only to fill genuine nutritional gaps.”

A 2023 study, published in the journal Current Developments in Nutrition, examined the effectiveness of multivitamin gummies. It directly made a comparison of its nutrient absorption rates to traditional vitamin tablets in healthy adults. The research highlighted a major health benefit and stated that multivitamin gummies are just as effective as tablets, demonstrating equal overall absorption (bioequivalence) for essential nutrients such as vitamin E, B12, and folate. Moreover, the gummies showed faster absorption for certain vitamins, with folate peaking in the bloodstream much more rapidly than traditional pills.

Benefits of Multivitamin Gummies

Dr Bhatnagar lists some of the benefits of multivitamin gummies:

  • It can be an effective way to bridge nutritional gaps, but they are not a substitute for a balanced diet.
  • They are particularly useful for individuals with diagnosed nutrient deficiencies, older adults, people on restrictive diets, or those who have difficulty swallowing tablets.
  • Gummies can also improve compliance with supplementation, especially among people who find it difficult to chew or consume oral tablets, making it easier for those with vitamin deficiencies to take their supplements regularly.

The type of gummies you eat also matters. It is believed that herbal gummies are a safer option. A 2025 study, published in the International Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences (IJPS), examined the formulation of herbal multivitamin gummies, which are made using natural ingredients such as moringa, beetroot, orange peel powder, honey, and jaggery.

The study noted that these ingredients provide therapeutic health benefits, acts as antioxidants, reduces inflammation, boosts immunity, and improves cardiovascular and digestive health. It adds that using natural sweeteners like honey and jaggery offers additional nutritional and antibacterial benefits, as compared to the refined sugars that are mostly found in commercial gummy supplements.

Risks of Multivitamin Gummies

Dr Bhatnagar lists some of the probable risks of multivitamin gummies:

  • Many gummies contain added sugars and may provide lower amounts of certain nutrients compared to conventional supplements, so consumers should read labels carefully rather than assuming all products offer the same benefits.
  • One of the biggest concerns is that gummies resemble confectionery, leading some people to consume more than the recommended dose.
  • Excessive intake of certain vitamins, especially fat-soluble vitamins like vitamins A and D, can have harmful health effects over time.
  • Supplements should always complement, not replace, a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, dairy, pulses, nuts, and lean proteins.
  • It is advisable to take multivitamin gummies only when recommended by a healthcare professional and to store them safely away from children, who may mistake them for candy.

Conclusion

To summarise, multivitamin gummies are a practical and effective way to meet your daily nutritional needs, especially if you suffer from pill fatigue. However, their potential added sugars and candy-like appearance may pose risks of overconsumption. Therefore, they should never replace a genuinely balanced, whole-food diet. For desired results, you should treat multivitamin gummies as a targeted supplement rather than a snack and always consult your doctor to make sure they are in line with your specific health needs.
