But she also adds that cheese is calorie-dense and can contain significant saturated fat, which may contribute to weight gain and elevated cholesterol if eaten in excess. “Therefore, cheese is not prohibited for diabetics; rather, it should be used strategically — preferably in controlled portions, alongside high-fiber foods, and as part of a balanced eating plan,” shares the expert.

  • Cheese provides several nutritional advantages that are particularly relevant for individuals with diabetes. Its low carbohydrate content makes it a stable choice that does not destabilise blood glucose levels.
  • The high protein in cheese supports satiety, helping reduce overeating and cravings — two major challenges in diabetes management.
  • Cheese is also a good source of calcium, phosphorus, zinc, and vitamin B12, which support bone strength, immunity, nerve health, and muscle function.
  • Some cheeses, especially fermented varieties like cottage cheese, feta, and Swiss cheese, contain probiotics that support gut health and may improve insulin sensitivity. When chosen wisely, cheese can be a nutrient-dense addition that complements a diabetic diet rather than contradicting it.

Prefer low-fat or part-skim cheeses like cottage cheese (paneer), mozzarella, ricotta, or feta, which provide protein without excessive saturated fat. Pair cheese with fiber-rich foods such as vegetables, whole-grain crackers, salads, or multigrain wraps — this combination slows glucose absorption and improves satiety,” shares Dr Chopra.

She adds that one should avoid eating cheese alone as a high-fat snack, as it may lead to excess calorie intake. “Choose natural cheeses over processed slices, spreads, or cheese powders, which often contain sodium and unhealthy additives. A typical diabetic-friendly serving is 20–30 grams, used as an addition to meals rather than the main ingredient,” she shares.

“Diabetic patients benefit from a diet built around balanced macronutrients, stable blood sugar response, and anti-inflammatory foods,” says Dr Chopra. On this note, she jots down some dietary tips for diabetics:

  • Prioritise non-starchy vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, legumes, and healthy fats.
  • Limit refined carbohydrates such as white rice, white bread, and sugary snacks, which cause rapid glucose spikes.
  • Distribute carbohydrate intake throughout the day instead of consuming large amounts in one meal.
  • Include foods rich in magnesium, fiber, and antioxidants — such as nuts, seeds, leafy greens, beans, whole grains, and berries — to improve insulin sensitivity.
  • Stay hydrated, avoid processed foods, and keep sodium intake moderate to manage blood pressure.
  • Regular meals, mindful snacking, portion control, and consistent physical activity are essential pillars of diabetes management.
  • Proper sleep and stress reduction also play a major role, as both directly affect insulin response.
