Is Vaginal Dryness Common?

If you are someone who faces difficulty regarding vaginal lubrication, then you should know that you are not alone. “Vaginal dryness is a common issue for many women, and it can happen at any age. While it is more frequent during perimenopause and menopause due to declining estrogen levels, younger women can also experience dryness because of stress, hormonal changes, certain medications, or inadequate arousal. So yes — vaginal dryness is common, and understanding why it happens can help you manage it better,” shares Dr Jain.

One common question many women often ask is – even when turned on during a sexual activity, why do they face dryness in their vagina? Our expert answers this as well.

“Even when someone is mentally and physically aroused during sexual activity, dryness can still happen. This is because lubrication depends on multiple factors, not just desire. Hormonal fluctuations (periods, postpartum, breastfeeding, menopause), dehydration, not enough foreplay, anxiety, or medications such as antihistamines, antidepressants, and birth control pills can affect the natural lubrication process. Sometimes, infections and underlying medical conditions can contribute to dryness as well. So, feeling ‘turned on’ but still experiencing dryness is more common than many realise,” explains Dr Jain.

Which Foods Increase Female Lubrication?

Diet also impacts natural lubrication. Dr Jain mentions that certain foods can help improve blood flow, balance hormones, and support vaginal moisture. She adds that foods that increase female lubrication include:

  • Water-rich foods like cucumbers, watermelon, oranges, and coconut water, as they support hydration.
  • Healthy fats like avocados, nuts, seeds, olive oil, and fatty fish, may help maintain hormone balance.
  • Phytoestrogen-rich foods like soy, flaxseeds, and sesame seeds, which naturally support estrogen levels.
  • Vitamin E-rich foods such as almonds, sunflower seeds, spinach, and broccoli to improve vaginal tissue health.
  • Omega-3-rich foods like walnuts, chia seeds, and salmon to enhance blood flow to the vaginal area.

How To Treat Dry Vagina Naturally?

On this note, Dr Jain shares that for women who are looking to manage dryness without medications, there are several natural ways to treat a dry vagina, such as:

  • Staying hydrated helps the body maintain natural moisture levels.
  • Using natural oils such as coconut oil, olive oil, or sweet almond oil as external lubricants (unless using latex condoms, as oils can weaken them).
  • Including phytoestrogens in the diet to support hormonal balance.
  • Practicing regular sexual activity or self-stimulation can increase blood flow to the vaginal tissues, promoting natural lubrication.
  • Avoiding harsh soaps, scented products, and douches, which can strip the vagina of natural moisture.
  • Pelvic floor exercises can improve circulation and vaginal health.

“However, if dryness is severe or persistent, a doctor may recommend estrogen-based creams or vaginal moisturisers,” adds the expert.

Is It Normal To Lack Vaginal Lubrication?

Does lack of vaginal lubrication indicate any serious issue or is it normal? “It is also important to know that it is normal to lack lubrication during certain circumstances – which can be caused due to stress, fatigue, menstrual cycle phases, or hormonal shifts. Occasional dryness is not a cause for concern. But if it becomes frequent, painful, or affects sexual comfort, seeking medical advice is helpful.”

Last but not the least, if you are wondering what is the best home remedy for lubricant, we have the answer. “For those looking for the best home remedy for lubrication, coconut oil is one of the most suitable and effective natural lubricants. This is because of its smooth texture, moisturising properties, and compatibility with sensitive skin. Pure and unscented aloe vera gel and olive oil are also excellent options. Always do a patch test first to ensure there is no irritation,” concludes Dr Jain.
