Dealing With Vaginal Dryness? Expert Shares 7 Herbs That Can Help You Combat It

Vaginal dryness is a common condition that can affect women of all ages. It can be very uncomfortable and even painful, causing irritation and itching, especially during intercourse. While various factors can cause vaginal dryness like hormonal changes, medication side effects, and certain health conditions, Dr Ganesh Chaudhary, Bachelor Of Ayurvedic Medicine, PHC, Darbhanga, Bihar, said that adding herbs into your routine can offer natural relief and support vaginal health. He listed some potent herbs that can help get you relief.

Black Cohosh

Dr Chaudhary said, "Black cohosh contains phytoestrogens, which mimic the effects of estrogen in the body. Estrogen plays a crucial role in maintaining vaginal lubrication and tissue elasticity." He added that Black cohosh can help alleviate vaginal dryness by balancing hormone levels.

Red Clover

Dr Chaudhary informed us that red clover is rich in isoflavones, which are compounds with estrogen-like effects. He said, "Regular consumption of red clover can help improve vaginal moisture and reduce discomfort associated with dryness."

Herbs To Combat Vaginal Dryness

Wild Yam

"Wild yam contains diosgenin, a compound that can be converted into estrogen-like substances in the body," said Dr Chaudhary. BreastCancer.org corroborated that including wild yam supplements or creams can help increase vaginal lubrication and relieve dryness.

Evening Primrose Oil

According to a study published in MDPI's journal 'Antioxidants,' evening primrose oil is a rich source of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an omega-6 fatty acid with anti-inflammatory properties. "GLA helps maintain the integrity of vaginal tissue and promotes natural lubrication," said Dr Chaudhary.

Ginseng

Dr Chaudhary says Ginseng is known for its adaptogenic properties, helping the body adapt to stressors and promoting overall well-being. "It can also enhance blood circulation, which is essential for maintaining vaginal health and moisture," he added.

Damiana

Dr Chaudhary then listed Damiana, saying it has a long history of traditional use as an aphrodisiac and reproductive tonic. "It can help stimulate blood flow to the pelvic area, improving vaginal lubrication and sensitivity," he said.

Herbs To Combat Vaginal Dryness

Aloe Vera

"Aloe vera is well-known for its moisturising and soothing properties. Applying aloe vera gel topically to the vaginal area can help relieve dryness and irritation of the skin around your vagina," Dr Chaudhary said.

Tips for Including Herbs In Your Diet

After listing the herbs that can help combat vaginal dryness, Dr Chaudhary talked about the best practices to include these herbs in your diet:

  • Consult a healthcare professional: Before adding any new herbs to your routine, especially if you're pregnant, nursing, or taking medications, consult with a healthcare provider to ensure safety and effectiveness.
  • Choose quality products: Opt for organic herbs and herbal supplements from reputable sources to ensure purity and potency.
  • Be consistent: Adding herbs to your daily routine may take time to show noticeable effects. Be patient and consistent with your herbal regimen for optimal results.
  • Practice self-care: Along with herbal remedies, prioritise self-care practices such as staying hydrated, eating a balanced diet, managing stress, and practising good hygiene to support overall vaginal health.

Dr Chaudhary concluded that while herbs can offer natural relief for vaginal dryness, it's essential to address any underlying causes and seek medical advice if symptoms persist or worsen. With the right approach, you can restore vaginal moisture and enjoy improved comfort and intimacy.
