We spoke to our expert Dr Ganesh Chaudhary, Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS), PHC, Darbhanga, Bihar, who listed various herbs and spices that you should include in your diet to deal with liver issues.

Herbs And Spices To Promote Liver Health

“Turmeric is a potent ayurvedic ingredient that helps in promoting liver health due to the presence of a compound known as curcumin. This compound has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that help in reducing inflammation in the liver and protects it against liver damage”, said Dr Chaudhary.

Dandelion Root

Dandelion root contains compounds called sesquiterpene lactones, which stimulate bile production and promote liver detoxification. It also has diuretic properties, helping to eliminate toxins from the body through urine.

Ginger

Another ingredient that can help in promoting liver health due to its anti-inflammatory and digestive properties is ginger. Dr Chaudhary added, “Ginger is rich in bioactive compounds, such as gingerol and shogaol, which have been proven to have protective effects on the liver and reduce inflammation. It also aids in bile production and enhances digestion, thereby promoting overall liver health.”

Cinnamon

Cinnamon contains antioxidants, such as polyphenols, which help reduce inflammation and protect liver cells from damage. “It also helps regulate blood sugar levels and improve insulin sensitivity, which is beneficial for individuals with liver issues, such as Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) and diabetes”, added Dr Chaudhary. Adding cinnamon to your meals or enjoying cinnamon tea can help support liver health and overall well-being.

Liquorice Root

Liquorice root has been utilised in traditional medicine for its numerous health benefits, one of which includes supporting liver function. The root contains compounds, like glycyrrhizin, that possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. According to a 2020 research involving 66 individuals diagnosed with fatty liver disease, it was found that the intake of two grams of liquorice root extract daily for a duration of two months resulted in a notable decrease in ALT and AST levels compared to those who received a placebo treatment.

Dr Chaudhary added, “It helps protect liver cells from damage and stimulates the production of new liver cells. However, it is crucial to use it carefully, as excessive intake may lead to side effects, such as high blood pressure and potassium depletion.”

Peppermint

You can even consume peppermint to keep your liver health in check. It contains menthol, which helps relax the muscles of the digestive tract and promote bile flow from the liver. Peppermint also has antimicrobial properties, helping to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria in the digestive system. Drinking peppermint tea or adding fresh mint leaves to your meals can help support liver health and improve digestion.
