Are Under-eye Masks Effective? Let’s Find Out

Under-eye masks are the newest skincare trend in the block. Can these patches actually treat wrinkles, dark circles and puffy eyes? Read to know.

You must have seen people posting photos or videos on social media, flaunting colourful shiny patches under their eyes. As you must have guessed, these patches are under-eye masks. They are said to be the latest trend in skincare. Many people believe they work like a miracle, when it comes to rejuvenating and relaxing tired eyes. But while they deliver many benefits, it is essential to understand what they can and cannot do.

To get an expert view on this, the editorial team of OnlyMyHealth reached out to Dr Ruben Bhasin Passi, Consultant - Dermatologist, CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram.

Can Under-eye Masks Treat Dark Circles And Bags?

You must have heard how under-eye masks are good when it comes to treating baggy eyes or dark circles. Let’s find out from our expert if there’s any truth to this.

“Under-eye masks improve the appearance of bags and temporary dullness under the eyes. Caffeine, hyaluronic acid, peptides, and niacinamide all constrict blood vessels and hydrate the skin, and help prevent fluid accumulation. Bags under the eyes caused by sleep deprivation, salty food, or late nights should respond well to masks. Dark circles are more challenging. Dark circles caused by pigmentation, genetic factors, or thinning skin are unlikely to respond to masks that cannot alter these conditions,” explains Dr Passi.

Benefits Of Under-eye Masks

On this note, let us take a look at some of the probable benefits of under-eye masks:

1. Tackles puffiness: Under-eye patches help to depuff the eyes. They are often packed with Green Tea and Cucumber extracts. These may help promote lymphatic drainage.

2. Boosts hydration: One of the major benefits of these eye patches is that they have the ability to infuse hydration into the skin. The under-eye area is prone to dryness because of many factors. Over time, this dehydration can cause fine lines, wrinkles, and a dull appearance. These patches use hydrating agents like Glycerin and Aloe Vera to help plump the skin, reducing dryness.

3. Reduces Dark Circles: Though they may not completely remove dark circles. Many patches have vitamin C and niacinamide, which have skin-brightening properties. These ingredients can lighten and reduce the appearance of dark circles.

4. Anti-ageing: Many under-eye patches have ingredients such as peptides, collagen, and retinol. They can help improve skin elasticity, and reduce signs of ageing such as fine lines and wrinkles.

5. Relaxing: Applying under-eye patches gives a relaxing and soothing feeling. The coolness of the patches can calm tired eyes. This makes them an excellent option for those who want to rewire after a hectic day.

Disadvantages Of Under-eye Masks

Do under-eye masks have any cons? Dr Passi says, “The biggest disadvantage is that their effects are temporary. Once the added hydration is gone, the skin is likely to return to normal. Some masks also contain added fragrance, alcohol, and preservatives, which may irritate the sensitive skin around the eyes. Another disadvantage is that they may promote a reliance on cosmetic fixes rather than addressing lifestyle-related causes of dark circles, puffiness, or dehydration.”

And is it safe to use an under-eye mask every day? Shedding light on this, the expert shares, “Intermittent use is safe for most skin types. Daily use is safe if the mask is dermatologist-approved, free of added fragrance, and made for sensitive skin. Masks containing powerful active ingredients and exfoliants should not be used every day, as the skin under the eye area is delicate.”

Are Under-eye Masks Effective For Wrinkles?

Can under-eye masks fight wrinkles? “They can temporarily reduce fine lines by plumping them with moisture, but they will not reduce deep wrinkles. Long-term prevention of wrinkles requires a dedicated sun protection, antioxidant, and retinoid treatment plan under the guidance of a dermatologist,” explains Dr Passi.

So, which is best to use an under-eye mask? Our expert answers.

“Using a mask during the day is best for treating puffiness and creating a smooth area for make-up application. Using a mask at night can enhance hydration, but should not replace a regular eye cream that works while you sleep,” says the expert.

Natural Alternatives To Under-eye Masks

If you want to ditch commercial under-eye masks and opt for a natural alternative to it, we have got you covered. Our expert suggests ways to do so.

“There are a number of simple remedies that can be made at home. Chilled cucumber slices, cold green tea bags, aloe vera gel, rose water, and cold teaspoons all revive the area without additives,” suggests Dr Passi.
