The editorial team of OnlyMyHealth reached out to Dr Shireen Furtado, Sr Consultant - Medical & Cosmetic Dermatology, Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore, to get an expert view on this topic. Let us take a look at what she has to say.

What Is Exosome Therapy In Skincare?

Many of you may be wondering what exosome therapy actually is. Our expert explains it for you.

“Exosome therapy in skincare is a treatment that uses tiny particles called exosomes – which are naturally released by skin cells and carry signals that help repair, heal, and grow new cells. In skincare, these exosomes are taken from safe, lab-grown stem cells and added to serums or used after procedures like microneedling to boost skin recovery,” shares Dr Furtado.

Speaking about how exosomes function, she says, “They work by sending messages to damaged skin to produce more collagen, reduce inflammation, and improve texture, brightness, and firmness. Many people notice smoother and healthier skin after the treatment; but results vary, it can be expensive, and long-term research is still growing. So, it is important to choose a trained professional and use trusted, well-tested products for safety.”

Do Exosomes In Skincare Really Work?

But are exosomes really helpful? “They seem to work for many people because they carry signals that help skin cells repair, heal, and make more collagen. Early studies show that exosome-based serums or treatments can reduce inflammation, improve texture, and speed up recovery after procedures like microneedling or laser,” shares Dr Furtado.

She further adds, “But the results depend on the quality of the product, how fresh and pure the exosomes are, and how they are delivered into the skin. While many dermatologists report smoother, brighter, and firmer skin after treatment, long-term research is still limited. So exosomes appear promising but are not a miracle cure, and it is important to choose trusted brands, get treatment from qualified professionals, and avoid products that do not clearly mention testing or safety.”

Benefits Of Exosomes In Skincare

Dr Furtado talks about the benefits of exosome therapy in skincare. She says, “Exosomes in skincare help the skin by sending signals that repair damaged cells, boost collagen, reduce inflammation, improve texture, brighten dull areas, speed up healing after treatments. It can make the skin look smoother and firmer.”

The expert adds, “These benefits happen because exosomes support healthy cell communication and encourage faster renewal. But the results depend on the quality of the product and the skin’s condition. Most people notice improvements within a few weeks, while the effects generally last for three to six months, with longer results seen when treatments are repeated or combined with procedures like microneedling. So exosomes give meaningful but not permanent changes. Maintaining a proper skincare routine helps the results last longer.”

Risks Of Exosomes In Skincare

“Exosomes in skincare are generally considered safe, but there are some risks and side effects because the technology is still new, and the quality of products can vary,” explains the expert.
On this note, Dr Furtado shares the risks of using exosomes for skincare:

  • The most common side effects include redness, mild swelling, irritation, or sensitivity, especially when exosomes are used after procedures like microneedling or lasers.
  • In rare cases, poor-quality or untested products may cause allergic reactions or infections if they are not processed properly.
  • There is also a small concern that unregulated exosomes may overstimulate skin cells, so it is important to choose clinically tested, well-sourced products and get treatments from trained professionals to reduce risks.
  • People with very sensitive skin should do a patch test before using exosome-based skincare.

Do Exosomes Work As An Anti-ageing Treatment?

Last but not the least, let us understand the exosome's role as an anti-ageing element.

“Exosomes work as an anti-ageing element because they help skin cells communicate better and send signals that repair damage, reduce inflammation, and support healthy growth. When applied through high-quality skincare or after treatments like microneedling, they encourage the skin to produce more collagen and elastin, which makes the skin look firmer, smoother, and brighter,” shares the expert.

“Early studies and dermatologists report improvements in fine lines, texture, and overall skin quality. But results depend on the purity and source of the exosomes; long-term research is still growing, so while exosomes show strong promise for boosting collagen and slowing visible ageing, they should be used under professional guidance for the safest and most effective outcome,” concludes Dr Furtado.
