Among the first signs of ageing are fine lines, dullness, and loss of elasticity, drive many people to reach for anti-ageing creams. In today’s time, the beauty market is filled with products promising youthful, glowing, and wrinkle-free skin. But how effective are these formulations, and can they truly reverse ageing?
Table of Content:-
According to our expert, Dr Rashmi Sriram, Dermatologist, Fortis Hospital, Rajaji Nagar, Bengaluru, , the science behind these creams and the ingredients matter and that defines if an anti-ageing cream is really effective. Read ahead to know if its time for you to change yours.
What Anti-Ageing Creams Can and Cannot Do
Anti-ageing creams are designed to improve the appearance of ageing skin, but their effectiveness does depend on the formulation and on the concentration of active ingredients besides consistency of use. According to Dr Sriram, these may improve skin texture, boost hydration, and reduce the presence of fine lines, “but they cannot permanently erase wrinkles or stop the natural ageing process.”
Ageing is influenced by a combination of factors, like genetics, sun exposure, pollution, lifestyle habits, and the body's natural decline in collagen and elastin over time. "A good anti-ageing cream supports the skin's structure and function, but expecting dramatic or overnight results is unrealistic," she shared.

Ingredients in Anti-ageing Creams That Actually Work
Not all anti-ageing creams are made of the right ingredients. Some contain scientifically backed ingredients with proven benefits, whereas some don’t. Dr Sriram shared a list if things to always look in your anti-ageing cream:
1. Retinoids (Retinol, Retinaldehyde, Tretinoin)
"Retinoids are the gold standard," Dr Sriram highlighted. They stimulate collagen production, increase cell turnover, and help reduce fine lines and pigmentation. But they can be irritating to begin with, so beginners should start with low concentrations.
2. Vitamin C
Vitamin C is a very powerful antioxidant, as it fights free radicals and brightens skin tones. It also supports the synthesis of collagen to make your skin look firmer and more radiant over time.
3. Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic acid is the best for helping with skin moisture retention, and making the skin plump. As Dr Sriram said, "Hyaluronic acid gives an instant boost of hydration, thereby making the fine lines less visible."
4. Peptides
Peptides signal the skin to produce more collagen. While it may take some time, peptides help the skin with firmness and over-all smoothness.
5. AHAs and BHAs
Acids, including glycolic acid and salicylic acid, can help exfoliate cells while improving skin texture and enhancing the absorption of other ingredients.

How Long Do They Take to Work?
“Anti-ageing creams require patience. "Most ingredients take at least eight to 12 weeks for visible changes to start showing up," Dr Sriram pointe out. The Retinoids might take even longer, sometimes six months, to give their effects. Consistency and proper usage are important. However, note that overuse irritates the skin, canceling their positive effects.
Who Should Start Using Anti-Ageing Creams?
Experts advise on taking a more preventive approach. According to Dr Sriram, “You don’t need to wait for wrinkles. You can use gentle anti-ageing ingredients in your mid-20s to slow down the premature signs of skin ageing.” However, stronger formulations like retinoids must be introduced more carefully and only under guidance if you have sensitive or acne-prone skin.
How To Choose the Right Anti-Ageing Cream
When selecting a product, look for:
- A short, effective ingredient list
- Clinical studies or dermatologist recommendations
- Stable packageing like air-tight, opaque containers
- Products suited to your skin type
- Avoid creams that promise miracle or overnight results.
Bottomline
Anti-ageing creams work, but only if they are made with the right ingredients and used consistently. They improve texture and hydration and early signs of ageing, but they won’t remove wrinkles completely or pause ageing. A realistic approach, good skincare habits, and sun protection go a long way.
