To get an expert view on how skinimalism can benefit our skin, we reached out to Dr Purva Pande, MBBS, MD Dermatology, DNB, MNAMS, Director Dr Purva's Skin Clinic, Panchkula. Let’s take a look at what the expert has to say.

What Is Skinimalism?

Before we dive right in, let us first tell you what skinimalism actually is. “Skinimalism is a skincare trend that tells you to keep your routine simple and let your real skin show. From a dermatologist's perspective, it means caring for what your skin truly needs instead of following long, trendy routines,” describes Dr Pande. The term basically combines ‘skincare’ and ‘minimalism’ – and it prompts a simple and effective skincare routine which involves fewer products to achieve a healthier skin.

Speaking more of this, she adds, “Use fewer products, skip extra steps, and choose mild but good formulas that help your skin stay healthy and support the skin barrier. This way, your skin can function effectively and still look naturally healthy.”

Pros And Cons Of Skinimalism

On this note, the expert brings focus into the benefits and disadvantages of skinimalism.

Speaking about its benefits, Dr Pande shares, “An important benefit of skinimalism is reducing the chances of irritation and product accumulation. Cutting down on overlapping ingredients and avoiding excessive exfoliation helps keep the skin barrier intact and hydrated. Often, when my patients adopt a more minimal regimen, they notice fewer breakouts, less redness, and more skin balance. It is easier to follow and costs less, so people are often more consistent with their skincare for better outcomes.”

When asked about its cons, the expert explains, “Skinimalism‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ is effective for the majority of people, but it might not be good for those who have certain skin issues like severe acne, pigmentation, or scars. These types of issues usually call for intervention and targeted treatments, which are more advanced than the usual processes of cleansing, moisturising, and sun protecting. Also, it is worth noting that minimal routines yield their results gradually. This is the reason why the factor of product quality turns out to be extremely significant, because with fewer steps, each product has to be properly formulated and compatible with your skin ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌type.”

What Skinimalism Skincare Routine Looks Like

Now that we know how beneficial skinimalism can be for our skin, let us take a look at how we can incorporate it into our skincare routine. Dr Pande shares jots it down for us:

  • A fundamental skinimalism approach consists of daily essentials. In the morning, begin with a gentle cleanser, hydrate your skin with a moisturiser, and finish with a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher.
  • At night, make sure to cleanse your skin again to remove dirt, sweat, and pollution, and follow up with a nourishing night cream that supports overnight repair.
  • If your skin requires more support, you can use one additional targeted product such as niacinamide or hyaluronic acid, but only if you are addressing a specific issue. The aim is to keep your routine simple, effective, and relaxing.

“If you have deeper issues such as fine lines, uneven texture, or pigmentation, areas where using topical products alone might not be sufficient, a treatment like Alma Hybrid can work alongside your minimal routine to give you the desired result. The reason is that with controlled resurfacing and collagen stimulation, patients can maintain very simple skincare routines at home and still get significant skin renewal results,” adds Dr Pande.

Tips To Practice Skinimalism The Right Way

On this note, Dr Pande shares some simple hacks to nail skimimalism like a pro. Let’s take a look:

  • To get Skinimalism right, pay attention to what your skin needs instead of following trends.
  • Pick products that offer a range of benefits, like formulations with ceramides, niacinamide, and hyaluronic acid.
  • These help keep your skin moisturised and firm.
  • Don't scrub your skin too much.
  • Add new skincare with caution in order to minimise the risk of irritation.
  • Patch testing is important for new products initially.
  • Sunscreen should be used every day.
  • More importantly, watch how your skin reacts. If it feels dry, irritated, or heavily layered, make your routine even simpler.
  • “Skinimalism is about being thoughtful, not just using a minimal number of products,” concludes Dr Pande.
