What To Apply On Face For Open Pores, Dermat Shares

Open pores are among the most prevalent skin issues faced by people who have oily and combination skin. They not only make the skin look uneven but also as traps for dirt, sebum and makeup residue, causing acne, blackheads and dullness. However, with the right skincare routine and specific ingredients, open pores can be visibly reduced and controlled well.

So, what do you really need to apply to reduce open pores? The editorial team of Onlymyhealth reached out to expert, Dr Kriti Lohia, CEO & Consultant Dermatologist, MBBS, DDVL, DABRM,  Aesthetics Redefined by Cocoona Clinic - Gurgaon, and explained it to us. Read ahead to now.

Why Do Pores Look Enlarged?

Pores are small openings on the skin through which oil and sweat can travel. As per Dr Lohia, "Pores are genetically predisposed, but their condition can deteriorate due to overproduction of oil, sun exposure, ageing, and improper skincare routines." When skin overproduces sebum, it causes the pore walls to stretch, thus making the pores look larger. With time, ageing and sun damage cause loss of collagen, further breaking down the skin structure and making pores more apparent.

What To Use On Face For Open Pores

The secret to opening up refined pores is to employ ingredients that balance oil, tighten pores, and stimulate cell turnover. Dr Lohia revealed some dermatologist-recommended tips on what to use. These include:

1. Niacinamide Serum

Niacinamide, or Vitamin B3, is a powerhouse product that regulates sebum production, enhances skin barrier function, and reduces the look of pores over time. "Applying a 5–10% niacinamide serum every day can cause pores to appear tighter and the complexion smoother," according to Dr Lohia.

2. Retinol (Vitamin A Derivative)

Retinol encourages cell turnover and collagen production, which helps to clear pores and smooth out skin texture. "Add retinol gradually, beginning with a low concentration two times per week at night, to avoid irritation," recommended Dr Lohia. Regular use can really tighten wide pores and minimise fine lines at the same time.

3. Chemical Exfoliants (AHA/BHA)

Alpha Hydroxy Acids (such as glycolic acid) and Beta Hydroxy Acids (such as salicylic acid) assist in shedding dead skin cells and removing oil build-up. "BHAs, particularly salicylic acid, are able to penetrate deep into pores and decongest them," said Dr Lohia. Use an exfoliating toner or serum two to three times a week based on your skin's tolerance.

4. Clay Masks

Kaolin or bentonite clay masks are magic in removing excess oil and cleansing pores. Use once or twice a week to maintain matte and refreshed skin. "These types of masks also prevent acne breakout," said Dr Lohia.

5. Sunscreen

Sun exposure causes breakdown of collagen, which enlarges pores. "It is essential to use a sunscreen with a minimum SPF 30 on a daily basis," stressed Dr Lohia. Gel or matt sunscreens are excellent options for oily and combination skin.

Skincare Habits to Avoid

Here are a few other skincare habits to avoid for open pores:

  • Over-cleansing: Cleansing your face too much can strip your face of natural oils, triggering rebound oil production.
  • Ignoring Moisturiser: Oily skin also requires moisture. Opt for an oil-free or gel moisturiser.
  • Sleeping with Makeup: It clogs pores and triggers inflammation. Always cleanse thoroughly before bed.

Bottomline

You cannot remove pores entirely, but with regular skincare, sun protection, and professional advice, you can largely reduce their visibility and get smoother, healthier skin.

FAQ

  • 1. Are open pores always irreversible?

No, pores cannot be closed permanently as they are a natural part of your skin, but their appearance can be reduced through proper skincare and treatments.
  • 2. Is it safe to use retinol for open pores on sensitive skin?

Yes, but start with a lower concentration (0.2–0.3%) and apply it only at night to avoid irritation. Pair it with a hydrating moisturiser.
  • 3. Which home remedy works best for open pores?

Cold compresses or ice cubes may, for a short while, constrict pores, yet for results that last, dermatologically tested products containing retinol and niacinamide are better.
