Is It Just Stress Or Anxiety? Mental Health Expert Helps You Identify

Wondering if you are experiencing stress or anxiety? A mental health expert explains the key differences, symptoms, and when to seek professional help.

Stress is extremely common in today’s day and age. Blame it on the hectic work schedule, lack of work-life balance, complexities of modern relationships, or financial challenges. Stress is said to be connected to different types of mental health conditions. Anxiety is one of them. Many people believe that stress and anxiety are synonyms. However, let us tell you that they are different from each other. While stress is the body's natural physical and mental response to a difficult or demanding situation, anxiety is a mental health condition.

To identify and differentiate between the two, we interacted with Dr Sharadhi C, Consultant Psychiatry, Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore.

Anxiety vs Stress: How to Differentiate?

Dr Sharadhi says that stress and anxiety share many symptoms, but they are not the same. On this note, the expert lists the key differences between the two:

Definition

Stress is usually a response to an identifiable challenge or pressure, such as exams, work deadlines, financial concerns, or family responsibilities. Once the stressful situation improves, stress often reduces. Anxiety, on the other hand, can continue even when there is no immediate threat or stressful event.

Symptoms

From a psychiatrist's perspective, stress may cause:

  • Temporary irritability
  • Muscle tension
  • Headaches
  • Sleep disturbance
  • Difficulty concentrating

Anxiety can cause similar symptoms, but is often accompanied by:

  • Excessive worry
  • Fear
  • Restlessness
  • Racing thoughts
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Sweating
  • A constant feeling that something bad may happen

“Anxiety tends to persist for weeks or months and may interfere with work, relationships, and daily activities,” adds the expert.

Triggers

Another important difference is that stress is generally linked to a specific trigger, whereas anxiety may continue without a clear reason or become much greater than the actual situation. Some people may also experience panic attacks, avoidance behaviours, or constant reassurance-seeking when anxiety becomes severe.

How Stress and Anxiety is Linked

A 2022 study, published in the journal Psychology, Health & Medicine, focuses on the fact how nine different types of chronic stress are specifically linked to anxiety levels in adults. The researchers examined over a thousand participants to measure their everyday stress triggers and overall anxiety symptoms.

Initially, the results depicted that many types of stress, such as social isolation, pressure to perform, and social tensions, all these are linked to higher anxiety. However, the study then took into account outside influences such as a person's underlying personality, demographics, and social support system. Once these outside factors were properly taken into account, the direct association between several types of stress and anxiety actually disappeared.

Ultimately, only two specific forms of stress remained strongly and directly linked to triggering anxiety: work overload and chronic worrying. This indicates that having an unmanageable amount of tasks at your job and constantly stressing over future events, these two are the primary drivers that push normal stress into a severe anxiety state.

The study's findings clearly noted that not all stressful situations impact our long-term mental health in the exact same way. By specifically focusing on workplace burnout and learning to manage persistent daily worries, you can effectively prevent and reduce their overall anxiety.

“Anyone experiencing ongoing worry, panic, or symptoms that interfere with daily life should seek professional evaluation. Recognising the difference between stress and anxiety allows people to seek the right support at the right time and helps prevent symptoms from becoming more severe,” concludes the expert.

Conclusion

To summarise, understanding the difference between everyday stress and clinical anxiety is important for protecting your long-term mental well-being. While stress is a temporary reaction to challenging life situations, anxiety is a serious condition that can significantly affect your daily functioning, sometimes even without a clear trigger.

As per research, persistent issues such as severe work overload and chronic worrying are the major culprits that can turn normal stress into full-blown anxiety. However, if feelings of panic and excessive fear become overwhelming, seek professional help without delay.
