Anxiety is one of the most common mental health issues in the world. There are various factors, such as traumatic life events, work stress, financial challenges or relationship issues, that can lead to developing anxiety disorder. Many people wonder: can you inherit anxiety from your family? Today, we will answer whether this condition can be genetic for some individuals or not.
To understand this better, we reached out to Dr Sharadhi C, Consultant, Psychiatry, Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore.
Can Anxiety Be Genetic?
We will begin by addressing the main question right away: can anxiety be genetic in certain cases? Answering this, Dr Sharadhi says, “Anxiety can have a genetic component, but it is not inherited in a simple way. People with a family history of anxiety disorders may have a higher chance of developing anxiety because certain genes can influence how the brain responds to stress, fear, and emotions. However, having these genes does not mean a person will definitely develop an anxiety disorder.”
The expert explains, “Environmental factors also play a major role. Childhood experiences, trauma, ongoing stress, physical illnesses, sleep problems, and major life changes can all of these contribute to anxiety. In many cases, anxiety develops because of a combination of genetic vulnerability and life experiences rather than genetics alone.”

Dr Sharadhi continues, “From a psychiatrist's point of view, understanding family history is important, but it is only one part of the assessment. Many people with no family history develop anxiety, while others with a strong family history never experience it. Healthy coping skills, regular exercise, good sleep, stress management, and early treatment can significantly reduce the impact of anxiety.”
What Study Says About Anxiety in Genes
A 2002 study, published in the Dialogues in Clinical Neuroscience journal, mentions that anxiety is a complex emotional and psychological experience. It ranges from normal reactions to clinical disorders such as panic disorder and generalised anxiety. The study says that while environment and life experiences definitely play a role, there is a real genetic component to anxiety as well. The research noted that studies comparing identical twins show that about 50% of the risk for developing anxiety symptoms is linked to genetics. However, it mentions that there is no single ‘anxiety gene’ that you can simply inherit from your parents.

Instead, the researchers noted that anxiety is a complex trait caused by multiple different genes, each of which has its own small effect. These different genes interact with one another and with stressful environmental factors to create a vulnerability to anxiety disorders. For instance, the researchers discovered variations in the gene accountable for transporting serotonin (a key mood chemical in the brain) that correlates with anxiety levels. It adds that since anxiety does not follow simple inheritance rules, pinpointing the exact genetic triggers remains a difficult challenge for researchers.
The study concludes that while you can inherit a biological predisposition to anxiety from your family, it is a blend of these genes and your life experiences that actually determines if you will develop an anxiety disorder.

When To See a Doctor
Dr Sharadhi says that if anxiety begins to interfere with work, relationships, sleep, or daily activities, it is important to seek professional help. She adds, “Anxiety disorders are highly treatable through psychological therapies such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), lifestyle changes, and, when needed, medication. Early diagnosis and treatment often lead to better outcomes and improved quality of life. The key message is that genetics may increase susceptibility, but they do not determine a person's future. With the right support and treatment, anxiety can be effectively managed, allowing people to lead healthy and productive lives.”

Conclusion
To summarise, genetics do play a significant role in determining whether you are prone to anxiety or not. However, they are not the primary or only cause of the condition. Experts and research agree that anxiety usually originates from a complex interplay between inherited biological vulnerabilities and external stressors, such as trauma or major life changes. Therefore, having a family history of anxiety does not indicate that you will develop this disorder. Similarly, a lack of anxiety in the family also does not make you completely immune. By prioritising your health by developing coping mechanisms, managing stress, and maintaining a balanced lifestyle, you can actively minimise their genetic risks. If anxiety begins to interfere with your daily life, seek medical help like therapy or medication.
