Celebrities are often asked this one question – what is the secret to your weight loss? And the answer is mostly the same – ‘I follow a strict and clean diet, I workout everyday, I practice yoga’ and so on. But are they always telling the truth? As per reports, many celebs opt for weight loss drugs, but they never admit it openly. But comedian-influencer Aishwarya Mohanraj is an exception. Recently, in a viral reel, she confessed shedding 22 kgs using Mounjaro, a weight loss drug. Her honest confession about her weight loss journey is making headlines.

But are these weight loss drugs safe? To get the answer, the editorial team of OnlyMyHealth reached out to Dr Pooja Pillai, Consultant - Internal Medicine, Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore.

Aishwarya Mohanraj's Candid Weight Loss Journey

After Aishwarya embarked on her weight loss journey, she did everything in the world possible – from following a healthy diet to working out regularly. But then she was diagnosed with Plantar Fasciitis, which didn’t allow her to workout. That’s when she resorted to Mounjaro. Aishwarya revealed that she took Mounjaro shots weekly for six months. Each shot cost her Rs 4,000. Later, the influencer reduced the dosage to twice a month, then once a month, and now she plans to stop it soon. Aishwarya acknowledged that it is an ‘expensive route’, and focused on the importance of consulting a doctor.

Aishwarya also highlighted the side effects and challenges she faced after taking Mounjaro – including nausea, appetite suppression and noticeable hair fall.

Recently, actress Soha Ali Khan took to Instagram and praised Aishwarya Mohanraj's honesty. In the video, she said, "So finally someone said it. They lost a ton of weight not just by eating right or working out, but by taking Mounjaro. And I think it takes great courage to speak the truth." She further focused on creating more awareness around it, with the help of medical experts. Soha wrote in the reel's caption, "Perhaps it's time we stop the speculation and the stigma and start the education." She mentioned that she will be taking this up as the subject of her next podcast, to spread the right knowledge about weight loss drugs.

Are Weight Loss Drugs Safe?

What about the safety of weight loss drugs? Dr Pillai explains, “Weight loss drugs can be safe for some people when they are prescribed by a qualified doctor and taken under proper medical supervision. But they are not safe or suitable for everyone because they can cause side effects like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, headache, dizziness, increased heart rate, mood changes, or sleep problems. In rare cases, they may lead to serious issues such as pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, thyroid concerns, or worsening of existing medical conditions.”

The expert adds, “People with diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, kidney or liver problems, or a history of eating disorders should be especially careful and must consult their doctor before starting any medication. These drugs work best when combined with healthy eating, regular physical activity, and long-term lifestyle changes rather than being used as a quick fix. They should never be taken without prescription, shared with others, or bought from unsafe online sources because that increases health risks and reduces safety.”

What Are The Risks Of Using Weight Loss Drugs?

As per a recent study, weight loss drugs such as Ozempic, Mounjaro, and Zepbound can drive significant weight loss, but stopping them is often followed by rapid weight regain. Researchers discovered that people regain weight faster after quitting these drugs than after diet and exercise alone. Improvements in heart health and diabetes risk also tend to reverse within a few years, cites the study. The results suggest long-term success may require more than medication alone. On this note, Dr Pillai lists down the risks of weight loss drugs:

  • Weight loss drugs can have several risks, especially when they are used without proper medical advice. This is because they may cause common side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, stomach pain, headache, dizziness, dry mouth, trouble sleeping, and increased heart rate.
  • Some people may also experience mood changes, anxiety, or depression.
  • In rare cases, these medicines can lead to more serious problems like pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, kidney injury, thyroid tumors, severe allergic reactions, or worsening of heart conditions.
  • There is also a risk of low blood sugar in people with diabetes, who are taking other medications.
  • Some drugs may interact with medicines used for blood pressure, mental health, or other chronic illnesses.

“Taking them without supervision can be dangerous, and there is also a chance of regaining weight after stopping the medicine, if healthy lifestyle habits are not followed, which can affect both physical and emotional health,” concludes Dr Pillai.
