Ozempic, which was originally developed to treat Type 2 Diabetes, is a once-weekly injection formulation of the active ingredient semaglutide. The drug is approved for adults in India only for diabetes type 2 treatment along with diet and exercise. It will be available in three different strengths, 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, and 1 mg, each with a different monthly cost.

The announcement was made by Vikrant Shrotriya, the MD of Novo Nordisk, on Friday. The company is aiming for the world’s biggest markets for diabetes and obesity treatments. As per some Media reports, Dr A G Unnikrishnan from The Chellaram Diabetes Institute, Pune, and Dr Shashank Joshi from Lilavati Hospital, Mumbai, also joined the launch.

What Exactly Is Ozempic?

Ozempic is an anti-diabetic medication that functions as a GLP-1 ((Glucagon-like-peptide-1)) receptor agonist. With its primary active ingredient semaglutide, the drug is mainly used in diabetes management and weight control. Developed by Novo Nordisk, the drug was first approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2017 and as per FDA guidelines, the injectable medication is administered once every week under the skin of the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm.

During a previous conversation, Dr Mahesh D M, Consultant Endocrinologist, Aster CMI Hospital, Bengaluru, told Onlymyhealth that Ozempic acts like natural hormones (GLP-1) in your body. "It helps release more insulin after you eat, makes you less hungry, and slows down how quickly food leaves your stomach. These effects together help control blood sugar and cause weight loss.”

The drug copies the natural hormone, GLP-1, which helps the body keep blood sugar levels normal. In simple terms, it slows down digestion and reduces hunger, making you feel full for longer.
