Ozempic Side Effect: Can Weight Loss Drug Lead To Genital Changes In Male Users?

Ozempic, the so-called miracle drug for weight loss, is yet again making headlines for a surprising side effect. Recent Reddit posts by male Ozempic users claim the drug may have led to noticeable growth in their penises, the New York Post reported.

One user wrote, “I recently measured myself down there and noticed I gained about one inch. Now, I think people will say it was because of the fat loss. However, at the time I measured myself before (4 years ago), I was thinner. I also pressed during measurement before and also this time. Has anyone else noticed this change in themselves?”

Another Redditor claimed he gained 1.5 inches in length: “No joke. Like you, I obviously know how long I was before I got very fat. Then after about seven months on tirzepatide, in my case, I gained 1.5 inches in length. Definitely not all from weight loss.”

While anecdotal, these claims have sparked a mix of scepticism, curiosity, and debate online. Hence, the OnlyMyHealth team connected with an expert to shed light on the matter.

Can Ozempic Cause Genital Changes In Men?

1

Ozempic, also known as semaglutide, is a drug originally developed for type 2 diabetes and associated weight issues. But now, some male users are reporting something unexpected: changes in their genitals – specifically, an increase in penis size.

According to Dr Shashank M S, Consultant – Urology and Renal Transplant, Aster CMI Hospital, Bengaluru, while there’s been a lot of talk online about Ozempic causing changes in male genitals, there's no solid scientific proof to support these claims.

"Ozempic is mainly used to manage diabetes and help with weight loss by controlling blood sugar and appetite. Some people may notice body changes due to rapid weight loss or improved blood flow, but that doesn’t mean the medication directly affects genital size or shape," he noted, adding that it's important not to believe everything seen on social media without evidence.

Could It Be The Weight Loss That Is Affecting Genital Appearance In Men?

2

The short answer is yes. Dr Shashank highlighted that rapid weight loss from GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic can sometimes change how the genitals appear, but it’s not because the drug directly affects them.

"When men lose belly fat or fat around the pubic area, more of the penis may become visible, which can make it look longer or bigger. It’s more about what was hidden by fat before, not actual growth. These changes are about appearance, not physical change in size. Everyone’s body responds differently, and it's best to focus on overall health rather than expectations set by online trends or social media buzz,” he explained.

Can Semaglutide Impact Male Sexual Health?

3

“Semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic, is mainly used to help with blood sugar control and weight loss; it’s not made to affect male sexual health or hormones,” explained Dr Shashank.

However, he added that the benefits of weight loss can have a ripple effect. Obesity and type 2 diabetes are known to reduce testosterone levels and impair blood flow, both of which can affect sexual function. By addressing these underlying issues, semaglutide may indirectly help improve sexual health in some men.

That said, Dr Shashank stresses that there’s currently no strong evidence to suggest that semaglutide itself alters hormone levels. “More research is needed, and anyone with concerns should speak with a healthcare provider.”

A Final Word

It is important to note that Ozempic or other so-called weight loss drugs are mainly used for managing diabetes and weight loss, not for influencing sexual or reproductive health. Dr Shashank shared, “There’s no clear evidence that it causes problems like infertility or hormonal changes. Some men may notice better sexual health over time due to weight loss and improved blood sugar levels.”

However, possible side effects like nausea, fatigue, or low appetite can affect energy and mood, which might indirectly impact sex drive. “If any unusual symptoms show up, like changes in libido or function. It’s best to talk to a doctor for proper advice and peace of mind,” he concluded.
