Fitness Test: What Matters More, Waist Size or Weight?

Body Mass Index (BMI) or Body weight - which one is a more accurate health indicator? A fitness coach answers for you.
Fitness Test: What Matters More, Waist Size or Weight?Fitness Test: What Matters More, Waist Size or Weight?

How many times have you thought about your fitness, only to focus on your overall body weight instead of your waist size? For decades, the Body Mass Index (BMI) has been used as the standard tool to measure how healthy and fit we are. However, emerging reports suggest that your waist size may actually matter more than your total body weight.

While BMI is used as a general protocol to measure obesity across the globe, fitness experts suggest it may not be the best way to gauge overall health. Many find it confusing to understand which method is actually the better health indicator. To clear up this confusion, the editorial team of Onlymyhealth reached out to fitness and nutrition coach Varnit Yadav. Continue reading to know what he shared with us.

Obesity: Global Epidemic

Obesity is no longer just a weight-related concern. Unhealthy food habits, sedentary lifestyles, and environmental factors have turned it into a global epidemic rising the importance of stronger health indicators.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), obesity is a chronic, relapsing disease arising from complex interactions between genetics, neurobiology, eating behaviours, and the broader environment.

As per the WHO report, 1 in 8 people globally were living with obesity in 2022. This issue is not limited to adults, as approximately 160 million children and adolescents aged 5 to 19 years are also affected. Obesity is a root cause of several life-threatening conditions, including heart problems, type 2 diabetes, and in some cases, it has been linked to cancer as well.

Waist Size For Heart Health

While most of us focus on BMI, our waist-to-height ratio is a more accurate method when it comes to predicting cardiovascular health risks. A report presented at Heart Failure 2025 by researchers from Lund University in Sweden found that waist circumference is a stronger risk predictor for heart health than BMI alone.

Fitness coach Yadav explains that waist size is a solid indicator of abdominal obesity, which often leads to lifestyle disorders such as deteriorating heart conditions and type 2 diabetes.

“A higher waist size is almost always an indicator of poor health and compromised blood markers,” he adds.

Understanding Beer Belly

Beer belly is a common term used to describe an individual carrying a high percentage of body fat around the belly area. Many believe that alcohol is the sole cause behind Beer Belly, but the reality is more complex.

According to Yadav, a beer belly refers to significant fat deposition in the waist region. "It isn't always caused by alcohol consumption; it can also result from stress eating and chronic eating disorders. While alcohol is injurious to health and contributes to fat deposition, it is just one of many factors," he highlights.

Higher abdominal fat can lead to fatty liver disease, sleep apnea, and, in severe cases, limited mobility.

The Ideal Waist-to-Height Ratio

As per the general guidelines, the ideal ratio is typically below 0.90 for men and below 0.80 for women (waist circumference below 90cm for men and 80cm for women). However, Yadav suggests no one should obsess over these specific numbers.

"Human bodies are complex systems, and one should only treat this ratio as an indicator at most. One should also get yearly health check-ups to assess their blood markers and check for any vitamin or mineral deficiencies. A thorough screening once a year will help you fix what needs immediate attention," he states.

Where does BMI lack?

Explaining why BMI is not the ideal measurement, Yadav says, "A muscular person weighing 100kg and an overweight person weighing 100kg at the same height will display the same BMI. This makes BMI a flawed way to keep an eye on health."

He suggests that the best way to assess your health is through comprehensive blood work and using visual progress markers to gauge how much extra body fat you are carrying.

Can Not Be Ignored Completely

While the waist-to-height ratio is more accurate for heart health, body weight cannot be completely ignored. "Weight should not be used as the primary health indicator, but it remains one of the top variables to consider when taking charge of your health. It gives a general idea of whether someone is overweight and carrying abdominal fat," Yadav explains.

He also highlights the importance of assessing your fitness levels if you frequently feel sluggish or find it hard to perform your daily tasks. "If you find yourself in such a condition alongside increased weight, that is a clear sign to take action," he notes.

Bottomline

Maintaining a healthy body weight is essential for a long life, but when it comes to accurate heart health indicators, your waist circumference plays a more vital role than BMI. While cardiovascular diseases were once associated with people over 40, now the cases of heart attacks have significantly risen in young adults, too. This changing lifestyle has made it more critical than ever to take note of these health markers.
