From Dalgona coffee to matcha – the internet is all about new diet trends. One such trend that has been making the rounds since quite some time is that of ‘egg coffee’. Is the combination of egg and coffee good or bad for consumption? Read to get the answer.

To understand this better, we reached out to Dr Geetika Chopra, Celebrity Holistic Nutritionist, New Delhi.

What is the Viral Egg Coffee Trend?

The egg coffee trend is making waves online. It is a creamy, frothy beverage which contains coffee mixed with egg yolk. To prepare the beverage, first brew a strong cup of coffee. Then separate one fresh egg yolk and whisk it strenuously with 2 teaspoons of sweetened condensed milk and a pinch of sugar or honey.

You need to whisk the mixture until it doubles in volume and turns pale yellow, as well as fluffy. This may take around 3-5 minutes (if done using hand) and 1-2 minutes (if done using an electric mixer). Thereafter, pour the hot coffee into the cup and mix the frothy egg foam on top. This will create distinct layers.

Is Egg Coffee Risky For Health?

Now let us address the main point – is egg coffee risky or safe for health? Dr Chopra explains, “Egg coffee has gained popularity, but it is not ideal for regular consumption. • Raw egg consumption may increase the risk of bacterial infection (like salmonella).
  • It may cause digestive discomfort in some individuals.
  • The combination of caffeine and heavy protein-fat can feel hard on digestion.
  • It may not suit people with gut sensitivity or acidity.
  • It’s not dangerous occasionally if prepared safely, but it’s unnecessary and not superior to balanced meals.
