Adding a pinch of salt to your morning brew is a popular trick to reduce bitterness. However, does this trendy hack really offer any real nutritional benefits? We consulted a leading clinical dietitian to uncover the truth behind salted black coffee and whether it can be a part of your daily routine.

To understand this better, we reached out to Ms Edwina Raj, Head of Services, Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics, Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore.

Is Drinking Black Coffee with Salt Healthy?

Ms Raj says that drinking black coffee with a small pinch of salt is generally safe for most healthy people and is sometimes used to reduce the bitterness of coffee, making it taste smoother without adding sugar.

The expert further explains, “Salt may help balance the flavour, but it does not significantly increase the health benefits of coffee, which already contains antioxidants and compounds that may support alertness and overall health when consumed in moderation.”

“While some people believe that adding salt to coffee can improve hydration, reduce acidity, or provide extra minerals, there is limited scientific evidence to support these claims. The amount of salt typically added to coffee is too small to offer meaningful nutritional benefits, and it should not be considered a health supplement,” says Ms Raj.

According to a 2013 study, published in the Endocrinology journal, individuals who drink coffee are more protected from the risk of contracting diabetes than those who do not. The research notes that coffee consumption has been linked with a reduced incidence of impaired glucose tolerance, hyperglycaemia and insulin sensitivity.

Who Should Avoid Black Coffee With Salt?

Ms Raj says that people with high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney problems, or those who need to limit their sodium intake should avoid adding salt regularly, as excessive sodium consumption can have negative effects on health over time.

The expert adds, “For individuals who experience stomach discomfort from regular coffee, reducing caffeine intake, avoiding coffee on an empty stomach, or choosing a less acidic coffee variety may be more effective solutions than adding salt. The overall health impact of coffee depends more on factors such as the quantity consumed, caffeine sensitivity, and whether it is part of a balanced lifestyle.”

Are There Any Health Risks of Black Coffee With Salt?

Ms Raj says that moderation remains the key when it comes to coffee consumption.

“Most healthy adults can safely enjoy black coffee as part of their daily routine, but excessive intake may lead to symptoms such as anxiety, sleep disturbances, palpitations, or digestive discomfort,” she adds.

The expert continues, “Adding a small amount of salt occasionally is unlikely to cause harm for most people, but making it a daily habit may contribute to unnecessary sodium intake, especially when combined with salt from other foods throughout the day. If someone has existing health conditions or dietary restrictions, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional before regularly consuming salted coffee.”

Conclusion

To summarise, adding a small amount of salt to your black coffee is a harmless hack for most people. However, it should not be viewed as a magic health supplement. Moreover, it is important to practice moderation and monitor your overall sodium intake, especially if you are managing underlying heart or blood pressure conditions.
