Can a High Protein Diet Prevent Muscle Loss As You Age? Expert Weighs In

Age-related muscle loss can significantly affect your strength and independence. Many individuals wonder whether nutrition is the ultimate defense against this. Read on to discover our expert insights from a top clinical nutritionist on whether a high-protein diet can effectively prevent muscle decline as you age.

Let us take a look at what Ms Edwina Raj, Head of Services, Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics, Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore has to say about it.

Can a High Protein Diet Prevent Muscle Loss?

Ms Raj says that a high-protein diet can help slow down muscle loss as people age, a condition known as sarcopenia, by providing the body with the amino acids needed to repair and maintain muscle tissue.

The expert explains, “As we grow older, muscle mass naturally declines due to changes in hormones, reduced physical activity, and the body's decreased ability to use protein efficiently for muscle building. Consuming adequate amounts of protein from sources such as eggs, fish, chicken, dairy products, pulses, beans, soy, nuts, and seeds can help support muscle strength, improve physical function, and reduce the risk of weakness and falls.”

Ms Raj continues, “Research suggests that older adults may need more protein than younger adults to maintain muscle health, making it important to include protein-rich foods regularly throughout the day rather than consuming most of it in a single meal. A balanced intake of protein can also aid recovery from illness, support mobility, and help older adults remain active and independent for longer.”

Tips To Prevent Muscle Loss

Ms Raj says that protein alone is not enough to completely prevent age-related muscle loss. On this note, the expert shares some other tips to prevent muscle loss:

Exercise

Regular physical activity, particularly strength-training exercises such as lifting weights, resistance band workouts, squats, and other muscle-building activities, is essential for preserving and improving muscle mass.  Exercise signals the muscles to grow and adapt, while protein provides the necessary building blocks for that process. Without regular movement and exercise, the body may not fully utilise the protein consumed for muscle maintenance.

Diet

A nutrient-rich diet also contributes to maintaining muscle health. Vitamins and minerals, especially vitamin D and calcium, support muscle and bone function and can complement the benefits of a high-protein diet.

“Adequate sleep and proper hydration are also important factors,” adds the expert.

Tips To Add Protein in Diet The Right Way

Ms Raj shares some tips to include protein into your daily diet the correct way:

  • It is also important to ensure that protein intake is appropriate for an individual's age, body weight, health status, and activity level.
  • While most healthy older adults can benefit from a higher protein intake, those with certain medical conditions may require personalised dietary guidance.
  • Rather than focusing only on protein supplements, it is usually best to obtain protein from a variety of whole-food sources as part of a balanced diet.

Conclusion

While a high protein diet can definitely help prevent muscle loss, combining it with regular strength training, healthy lifestyle habits, and routine medical check-ups offers the most effective strategy for preserving muscle mass and strength as people age. This approach can improve overall quality of life, support independence, and help older adults stay physically active and healthy for longer.
