Myth vs Fact: Does Excess Protein Cause Hair Loss? Dietitian Reveals the TruthMyth vs Fact: Does Excess Protein Cause Hair Loss? Dietitian Reveals the Truth

Are you aiming for a high protein diet? If yes, then you must have received different advice from people around you. Some of them may be as basic as protein timing or which protein to have, others may be bizarre. One of the common myths related to high protein intake is that it causes hair loss. Is this actually true or just a false assumption? Today, we will answer this for you in this article.

To understand this better, we reached out to Ms Chitra BK, Chief of Dietetics, KIMS Hospitals, Electronic City, Bengaluru.

Can Eating Too Much Protein Cause Hair Loss?

Ms Chitra says that the misconception that excessive protein intake leads to hair loss is nothing but a myth. Explaining this further, the expert says, “On the contrary, proteins play a very important role in healthy hair. This is because hair comprises a lot of keratin, which is a protein.”

She continues, “There could be some issues with an unbalanced high-protein diet. People who follow high-protein diets to lose weight sometimes drastically cut down on carbohydrates and the amount of fruits, vegetables, and grains they take. This leads to a lack of important nutrients such as iron, zinc, biotin, vitamin D, and other B vitamins, which are extremely important for healthy hair. Rapid weight loss can also result in temporary hair shedding called telogen effluvium.”

How Diet Impacts Hair Health

Ms Chitra says that hair loss occurs because of nutritional imbalance and calorie deprivation, and not because of protein itself. The expert adds, “Consuming large amounts of protein supplements without consulting a physician can put some stress on the body of those people who already have kidney disease; but again, hair loss is not the result.”

She continues, “Healthy hair needs a balanced diet comprising proteins, grains, fats, fruits, and vegetables. Hydration and ensuring adequate intake of all nutrients in general is much more crucial than just taking additional proteins.”

A 2021 study, published in the International Journal of Trichology, explores the powerful link between what we eat and the health of our hair. It highlights that a poor diet is a major, yet preventable, cause of hair loss. The researchers add that severe calorie restriction and crash diets can force the body to shut down non-essential functions such as hair growth to conserve energy. This can lead to sudden and noticeable shedding.

Hair is primarily made of protein. Therefore, failing to consume enough dietary protein can turn hair strands weak, brittle, and much more likely to fall out. The study also identifies specific mineral deficiencies, particularly low iron and zinc, as some of the common culprits behind both temporary shedding and chronic hair thinning.

It further notes that essential vitamins play a crucial role as well, such as Vitamin D – which is necessary for creating new hair follicles and keeping the hair growth cycle active. Moreover, vitamins such as C and E act as protective antioxidants that protect the scalp and hair follicles from everyday environmental damage and cellular ageing.

However, the researchers warn against blindly taking heavy nutritional supplements without an expert diagnosis. Consuming too much of certain nutrients such as Vitamin A and selenium through over-supplementation can trigger hair loss, instead of preventing it. The study concludes that a balanced diet rich in whole foods is the safest and most effective way to provide the right nutrients for your hair.

Can Whey Protein Cause Hair Loss?

A recent study, published in the journal JAAD Reviews, examines the growing concern among fitness enthusiasts about whether consuming whey protein supplements can cause hair loss or not. The researchers discovered how whey protein, particularly whey protein isolate, impacts the body's natural hormone levels after regular consumption.

The findings stated that whey protein contains high levels of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs). This naturally boosts testosterone production during and after workouts. In the body, this excess testosterone is usually changed into a stronger hormone known as dihydrotestosterone (commonly called DHT).

For individuals who are genetically predisposed to male or female pattern baldness, increased levels of DHT can shrink hair follicles and shorten the natural hair growth cycle. Therefore, the study indicates that while whey protein itself does not directly make hair fall out on its own, it can significantly increase the shedding process in people already prone to genetic hair thinning.

The researchers also added that individuals without any family history of hair loss generally did not experience negative effects on their hair thickness from whey protein. For those noticing increased shedding, the study suggests that switching to plant-based alternatives such as pea or soy protein. This may help because they do not cause the same sharp increase in DHT levels. The research concluded that consuming whey protein does not automatically lead to baldness; however, it can act as a powerful catalyst for hair loss in those who are already genetically vulnerable.

Conclusion

The belief that eating too much protein leads to hair loss is a myth. In reality, hair is made of protein, and a lack of it is more likely to cause hair fall. When hair loss is linked to high-protein diets,  it is usually due to the severe restriction of other essential nutrients, such as vitamins and minerals, rather than the protein itself. To maintain healthy hair, it is important to focus on a well-balanced diet that is rich in whole foods. If you are genetically prone to hair loss, monitor your use of certain supplements such as whey protein isolate.
