Counting protein intake has become a popular norm these days. People are becoming more aware about the benefits of protein with time, and are finding different ways to include it in their diet. Protein coffee is one such way. What are its benefits? Do they come with any risks as well? Let’s find out.

To understand this better, we reached out to Ms Edwina Raj, Head of Services, Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics, Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore.

What is Protein Coffee?

Ms Raj says that protein coffee, also called ‘proffee’, is a drink made by mixing coffee with a protein source such as milk, high-protein milk, or protein powder. “Many people drink it as a quick breakfast option or as a pre-workout drink because it combines caffeine and protein in one beverage. It has become popular among fitness enthusiasts and people trying to increase their daily protein intake,” explains the expert.

There are many ways to prepare a protein coffee. According to the Cleveland Clinic, here are two ways to prepare it:

  • Take a scoop of protein powder and mix it with iced coffee (prefer iced drinks because the powder may typically clump in hot coffee).
  • Mix a premade protein shake with coffee.

Benefits of Protein Coffee

Ms Raj lists the benefits of protein coffee:

  • The main benefit of protein coffee is convenience.
  • It can help people feel fuller for a longer time.
  • It can reduce unnecessary snacking.
  • Protein supports muscle repair and helps maintain muscle mass, especially in physically active people.
  • The caffeine present in coffee may improve alertness, concentration, and energy levels.
  • Drinking protein coffee after exercise may also help recovery in some individuals.
  • Protein coffee can also be useful for busy professionals who skip breakfast often.

“When prepared with healthy ingredients such as milk, unsweetened coffee, and moderate protein, it can be part of a balanced diet. Some people also find that protein added to coffee reduces hunger cravings during the day,” adds the expert.

Risks of Protein Coffee

Ms Raj says that protein coffee also has some risks, if consumed excessively. The expert lists them down:

  • Too much caffeine may cause anxiety, acidity, palpitations, sleep disturbance, headaches, or increased heart rate.
  • Adding large amounts of sugar, syrups, whipped cream, or flavoured powders can make the drink unhealthy and high in calories.
  • Some protein powders may contain artificial sweeteners or additives that may not suit everyone.
  • Protein coffee should not completely replace proper meals every day.
  • A balanced breakfast with fibre, fruits, and whole foods is still important for overall nutrition.

“People with kidney disease, uncontrolled blood pressure, stomach ulcers, or caffeine sensitivity should be careful and consult a doctor before consuming high amounts regularly,” concludes Ms Raj.
