Have you ever wondered what are the psychological reasons that fuel curiosity behind such viral content? To get an expert view on this, we reached out to Dr Divya Shree KR, Consultant – Psychiatry, Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore.
What Is The 40-Minute Viral Video?
So what exactly is the 40-minute viral video? As per reports, this clip allegedly contains inappropriate content of a brother-sister duo. However, there is no confirmation regarding its content or whether this clip is a MMS leak or not.
According to some other reports, the 40-minute viral video is not actually linked to one specific identifiable clip. Rather, it is said to be a combination of unrelated videos, misleading thumbnails and vague claims. All this has been merged into a single narrative online.
Netizens reportedly are not aware of the video’s content. This has fuelled confusion, and many are likely to click on random links in search of answers. This has made this trend risky. Cybersecurity experts often cautions on clicking on these search terms such as ‘leaked full video’. These may pose as ideal bait for online scams.
Why Inappropriate Content Appeals To Netizens
What are the psychological reasons behind the appeal of inappropriate online content? Our expert answers.
“Vulgar viral content attracts a lot of internet users because it provokes strong and immediate feelings. Typically, such content frightens people or makes them laugh, or it may simply feel daring and unyielding. The human brain is designed to spot things that violate rules or are unwelcome. Usually, vulgar content is of a short length, is simple, and can be understood by anyone, so people take it in rapidly. A great number of users share it just for fun, without thinking too much about the consequences. Besides, it allows people to feel free in saying or hearing things which are not acceptable in reality,” explains Dr Shree KR.

She continues further, “Social media algorithms are designed to promote the content that receives reactions very quickly. Vulgar posts are often liked, commented on, and shared rapidly. People want them to be accepted and liked out of pressure, as individuals try hard to be in the right place at the right time and not miss out on trends. For some individuals, it serves as a means of relaxation and a way to turn their attention away from their daily problems. Gradually, due to continuous exposure, such content becomes perceived as normal, which in turn leads to its higher and wider popularity.”
Psychological Reasons Behind Curiosity In Vulgar Viral Content
On this note, Dr Shree KR lists down the psychological reasons that fuel curiosity behind such vulgar viral content:
- One of the aspects of human nature is that people want to know what is not for them. Sexual-related content, for instance, is very attractive to the brain's reward center as it releases dopamine – a pleasure chemical that creates a feeling of delight and satisfaction.
- At the same time, it also entertains the person, without sharing the emotional side of the story – which is the most common aspect of a human relationship.
- A lot of people find it as a diversion from their stressful lives, sense of isolation or just getting bored.
- Internet anonymity gives people the power of decision-making without themselves getting in the way as they no longer have fear of being judged and hence they feel safe to explore.
- The social comparison theory in this case is that people want to know what others are watching or talking about. The fear of missing out makes people want to see what is going on.
- The repeated stimulation makes the brain need even stronger stimulation after each exposure. The non-stop availability of materials, coupled with the continuous exposure to it, gradually leads to waning interest, which in turn, fuels the quest for more content and consumption.
