Lubricants And Moisturisers: Expert Explains How To Choose The Right Products For Intimate Wellness

In India’s growing conversation about intimacy and personal wellness, the spotlight has turned to products like lubricants and moisturisers. These products can play a key role in making intimate moments more comfortable and enjoyable. Whether you're seeking to address dryness or enhance pleasure, choosing the right products can make a big difference. We spoke to our experts Dr Vivek Sama, Founding Member, Amocare and Prabhat Maheshwari, Co-Founder and Director, Amocare, who shared insights on the same.

The Role of Lubricants and Moisturisers

  • Lubricants: They are designed to reduce friction during sexual activity, making the experience more comfortable and pleasurable. They are typically used at the time of a sexual encounter and can also enhance arousal and pleasure.
  • Vaginal Moisturisers: are intended to provide ongoing hydration and support to the vaginal tissues. They are often used regularly, even when not sexually active, to address chronic dryness or discomfort. They create a protective barrier that improves moisture levels and reduces irritation.

According to a 2022 study, using lubricants during sex can enhance sexual health and well-being, particularly for those dealing with vaginal dryness due to menopause, experiencing dyspareunia (pain during intercourse), or participating in anal sex.

According to a 2021 study, vaginal moisturisers are primarily used to alleviate symptoms of vaginal dryness. They are formulated with water and ingredients like hyaluronic acid or polycarbophil.

How To Choose Lubricants Suited For You?

When choosing a lubricant, understanding the differences between types is crucial. "Selecting the right lubricant depends on your specific needs and the products you'll be using it with. Silicone-based lubricants are long-lasting, hypoallergenic and pH-balanced but should not be used with silicone sex toys," said Maheshwari.

  • "Water-based lubricants are versatile and compatible with both condoms and sex toys. These days, water-based lubricants are being developed to eliminate reapplication, making them ideal for long-lasting pleasure," said Dr Sama.
  • When choosing water-based lubes, picking one with organic or natural ingredients and free from parabens, perfumes, and colours is advisable.  Water-based lubricants are also easier to find in stores and are available in various forms, such as liquids, gels, and lotions. Gel-based lubricants are ideal due to their compactness and ease of use.
  • Additionally, adding intimate foam washes into your routine can complement water-based lubricants by maintaining cleanliness and comfort. This combination is better than oil-based lubricants because they offer gentle cleansing without disrupting the natural pH balance of intimate areas.
  • Oil-based lubricants offer extended moisture and are excellent for massages, but they can degrade latex condoms and may lead to infections if used internally.

Natural Lubricants

Natural lubricants provide a soothing option for improving intimate comfort. "They enhance comfort and pleasure while being gentle on the skin. Some examples include vitamin E liquid capsules, which are rich in antioxidants and support skin health; natural coconut oil, known for its moisturising and antibacterial properties; and natural almond oil, which provides long-lasting hydration and is gentle on sensitive skin," said Dr Sama.

"These lubricants are long-lasting, reducing the need for frequent reapplication, however, they may not be suitable with latex condoms. Many of these options help maintain a pH balance (4-5) and thus prevent irritation while being free of harsh chemicals," added Maheshwari.

Choosing Moisturisers

Vaginal moisturisers come in various forms, including creams, gels, suppositories, and natural oils. Creams and gels are inserted into the vagina using an applicator, providing moisture over time. Suppositories offer a more concentrated dose of moisture. Natural oils, such as vitamin E, coconut oil, and almond oil, can also be used as moisturisers, though care should be taken when using them with other products like condoms or toys.

Therefore, look for moisturisers that contain hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid or glycerine. Avoid products with harsh chemicals or fragrances that can irritate the vaginal tissues. The recommended frequency of use for moisturisers varies depending on the severity of vaginal dryness.

Bottomline

In a nutshell, staying lubricated isn’t just about feeling good, it’s also about keeping things healthy down there, helping to prevent infections by maintaining a balanced environment. If you're on a fertility journey, the right lubricant or moisturiser can be a great ally, creating an optimal setting for sperm. And for those with sensitive skin, choosing gentle, chemical-free products means you can enjoy them without worry.
