What is Lyme disease? It is a contagious infection caused by the bite/spread of a bacterium called Borrelia Burgdorferi. The disease progresses within three to thirty days after being bitten by the bacteria. It takes thirty days or sometimes a few more months for the signs to appear. Lyme disease causes swelling and red spots on the hands and feet of an infected person. As per experts, till date, there is no guarantee, whether Lyme disease can be cured. Therefore, this disease is also called incurable disease. Every year more than 30,000 cases of Lyme disease are reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). So, with this article, we are going to tell you, what is the cause of Lyme disease and how it exhibits the signs and symptoms. 

Causes of Lyme Disease: As we have already mentioned above that Lyme disease is caused by the bite of a bacteria called Borrelia burgdorferi. However, some inherited genetic factors may also influence the risk of Lyme disease. It is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected black-legged ticks. Common symptoms include headache, fever, fatigue, and erythema migrans (a typical skin rash).

  • Not only this, if the Lyme disease is not treated in time, then it can also spread in various parts and organs of your body (including your heart, joints and other nervous systems).
  • In maximum cases, Lyme disease is successfully treated with oral antibiotics. In some patients, signs, such as pain, fatigue and muscle or joint aches, continue even after medication, a disease termed PTLDS “Post Treatment Lyme Disease Syndrome”.
