The expert says, “The answer sits somewhere between ‘not entirely nonsense’ and ‘not the villain influencers make it out to be’. Laboratory studies have shown that high-energy visible (blue) light, the kind emitted by laptops, phones and LED lighting, can trigger melanocytes to overproduce pigment, particularly in medium and darker skin tones already prone to melasma.”
She further adds, “Under lab conditions, exposure has produced dark patches lasting months. But real-world screen use is a different story. A French clinical trial exposing melasma-prone skin to laptop-level blue light for realistic durations found no measurable worsening, largely because everyday screens emit far lower irradiance than the intensities used in lab experiments, and nowhere near what unprotected sun exposure delivers. So the honest picture is nuanced: screens are a minor, cumulative contributor for those already predisposed to pigmentation, not a standalone cause of new dark patches.”

How Blue Light From Screen Affects Your Skin
A comprehensive 2023 study, published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, examined the effects of screen time on our skin. It noted that when people spend more time using smartphones, laptops, and indoor LED lighting, their skin is constantly bombarded by artificial blue light. The researchers found that this ongoing daily exposure directly speeds up the skin's natural ageing process.

Thereafter, these free radicals can cause severe oxidative stress, a condition that actively damages healthy skin cells and prevents them from functioning normally. Dr Passi advices, “The more useful takeaway for anyone worried about their laptop is less about avoiding screens altogether and more about layering broad-spectrum sunscreen daily, since UV remains the dominant driver by a wide margin, with blue light protection a sensible but secondary add-on for melasma-prone skin.”
