What Exactly Is Blue Light?
Before we blame our devices, we need to understand what we are dealing with. Explaining what Blue light is, Dr Tayal says that blue light is a part of the visible light spectrum that has very short wavelengths and high energy.
"Naturally, it is everywhere; it comes from the sun and is actually quite helpful during the day. It keeps us alert, boosts our mood, and helps us stay productive," he adds.

However, the problem starts after the sun goes down. Artificial sources like smartphones, tablets, laptops, and LED lighting emit high levels of blue light. Dr Tayal shares, "When we stare at these screens in the evening, we are essentially sending daylight signals to our brain at a time when it should be winding down for the night."

How Blue Light Hijacks Your Sleep
Our bodies operate on a 24-hour internal clock known as the circadian rhythm. This clock tells us when to be awake and when to rest. According to Dr Tayal, blue light throws this entire system out of gear by targeting a specific hormone: Melatonin.
Dr Tayal mentions, "Blue light directly influences our circadian rhythm by suppressing melatonin, the hormone that signals to your brain that it’s time to sleep."
"Research shows that evening exposure to blue light can delay melatonin release, making it much harder to fall asleep. Even if you manage to stay in bed for eight hours, the quality of that sleep is often fragmented and far less restorative than it should be," he notes.

Consequences Of Daytime Fatigue
This is where most people get confused. You might think that because you were unconscious for eight hours, you should feel refreshed. But sleep is about quality, not just quantity.
Dr Tayal notes that blue light exposure alters the architecture of your sleep. "Poor sleep quality from blue light exposure manifests as daytime tiredness, difficulty concentrating, mood disturbances, and slower reaction times," says Dr Tayal.
If your brain never reaches those deep, restorative levels of sleep because of screen interference, you will wake up feeling like you’ve pulled an all-nighter, despite being in bed all night.
Practical Steps to Reclaim Your Energy
If you can’t give up your devices entirely, you can at least minimise the damage. Dr Tayal suggests a few simple lifestyle shifts to help your brain get back on track:
The 2-Hour Rule
Ideally, you should limit screen time to 1 to 2 hours before you plan to sleep. This gives your melatonin levels a chance to rise naturally.
Night Mode is Your Friend
Use night shift or blue light filters on your phone and laptop. This shifts the display to warmer tones, which are less disruptive to your brain.
Warm Lighting
Swap bright white LED bulbs in your bedroom for warm, dim lighting to create a sleep-friendly environment.
Blue-Light Glasses
If your work requires you to be on a computer late at night, consider wearing blue-light-blocking glasses to filter out the most harmful wavelengths.
The Long-Term Impact of Blue Screen Exposure
Ignoring the effects of blue light doesn't just make you grumpy in the mornings; it can have long-term consequences. Dr Tayal shares that chronic disruption of the circadian rhythm has been linked to
