Hair Falling Out After a Shower? Try This Expert-Approved Routine

Noticing hair fall in the shower? Read ahead to know expert-approved routine that can decrease hair breakage while allowing hair shedding to recover.

If your heart sinks every time you see strands circling the drain, you’re on the right page. Hair loss during a shower may look a lot, but it actually represents normal shedding. According to experts, what people observe is usually normal; however, it only becomes more intense during the hair-washing day.

Why Does Hair Fall Look Worse In Shower?

On average, a woman sheds between 50 and 100 strands every day. Many of these hairs are already in the resting (telogen) phase and get released when water and shampoo loosen them.

In an exclusive interaction with the editorial team of Onlymyhealth, Dr Ruben Bhasin Passi, Consultant Dermatologist at CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram, explained that people experience hair loss from the telogen stage because their hair remains unbrushed for several days. She said, “When we don’t brush hair or regulate scalp on a daily basis, telogen hairs show up and shed all at once during hair wash.”

She highlighted that people need to identify repetitive behaviour patterns. Telogen Effluvium (TE) occurs when people experience hair loss that results in even distribution of hair loss throughout their scalp. It is often triggered after illness, emotional stress, rapid weight loss, surgery, childbirth, or medication changes. However, the pattern of hair loss, which creates receding temples and a widening part, requires professional assessment to determine its underlying cause.

Expert-Approved Hair-wash Routine

Washing hair becomes less frightening when you apply smart changes which protect the scalp while reducing breakage. Here is what Dr Passi recommended:

1. Detangle Hair Before Washing

Use a wide-tooth comb on dry hair to remove knots and even out the hair. This prevents tangles from tightening and snapping strands once wet.

2. Use Lukewarm Water, Not Hot

Hot water can be extremely detrimental to hair and scalp health. Studies show that washing hair with hot water removes essential oils from the scalp and weakens the hair shaft. Lukewarm water, on the other hand, helps provide effective cleaning that protects both hair and skin.

3. Choose a Mild Shampoo and Be Gentle

Dr Passi emphasised choosing a mild cleanser that does not contain sulfate. “Massage the scalp lightly with your fingertips, avoid vigorous scrubbing or piling hair on top of your head,” she recommended.

4. Use Conditioner Smartly

“You should apply conditioner to your hair starting from the mid-lengths to the ends, avoiding application on your scalp except when a doctor recommends it,” she added. Rinse thoroughly to remove all product residue because any remaining product can create weight for hair and cause discomfort.

5. Dry With Care

Use a soft towel to blot hair without any rubbing. Rubbing with force can create more friction, which may result in more hair damage.

6. Detangle When Damp, Not Dripping

The most delicate state of hair occurs when it is dripping wet. Dr Passi highlighted that damp hair should only be combed with a wide-tooth comb, starting from the ends to the roots.

When Should You Worry About Hair Loss?

Consult a dermatologist if hair shedding starts to match or exceed 150 strands per day for over a month or if it is accompanied by itching, pain, redness and patchy hair loss. “There are tests and trichoscopy that can help distinguish telogen effluvium from other causes,” said Dr Passi.

Recovery from TE depends on addressing the trigger. Your doctor may check iron levels, thyroid function, review recent illnesses or medications, and guide treatment. The hair can start to grow back once the root cause has been treated over time

Bottomline

People commonly experience hair loss after showers. For healthy hair growth, experts recommend washing the hair gently, watching for patterns, and addressing underlying triggers. Healthy hair growth usually returns with time and the right care.

FAQ

  • Q1. Is hair fall during shampooing normal?

Yes. The body loses hair throughout the day, and during washing, people shed hair which has reached its telogen phase.
  • Q2. How long does telogen effluvium last?

The condition lasts for three to six months after the trigger stops.
  • Q3. Can changing shampoo stop hair fall?

A gentle shampoo can minimise hair breakage and scalp discomfort, but diagnosed hair loss needs the underlying cause to be treated.
