Finding that first grey hair in the mirror can be a bit of a shock and unsettling, often leading you to search for solutions. With the hair turning gray, many question if this can reverse to having shiny black hair? While the internet is full of miracle oils and home remedies, the reality from the scientific community is a bit more complex.
To understand and gain more insights into this the editorial team of Onlymyhealth reached out to Dr Veena Praveen, Head Medical Advisor (South) and Consultant Dermatologist at Kaya Limited. Continue reading to know what she shared with us.
Why Does Hair Turn Grey?
The mystery of greying starts deep within your scalp. Our hair gets its natural colour from a pigment called melanin, which is produced by specialised cells within the hair follicle. As we grow older, these pigment-producing cells begin to slow down or stop working altogether.

Dr Praveen explains, "When melanin production reduces or ceases, the hair begins to grow out grey or white. In the majority of people, this process is closely linked to age and genetics, which unfortunately makes it largely irreversible. Once the genetic clock for your hair follicles has run down, the loss of pigment is usually permanent."

When Can Grey Hair Turn Black Again?
While age is the most common cause, researchers have found that not all greying follows the same permanent rule. In some specific cases, grey hair appears due to temporary triggers rather than permanent damage to the pigment cells.
According to Dr Praveen, nutritional deficiencies are a major factor in premature greying. Low levels of Vitamin B12, iron, copper, or folate have been scientifically linked to a loss of hair colour. She further shares, "When these specific deficiencies are corrected through diet or supplements, new hair growth may actually regain some of its original colour. However, it is important to note that this change happens in new hair strands growing from the root, not in the hair that has already grown out."

What Dermatologists Say About Grey Hair Home Remedies
We have all seen the advertisements for special shampoos, herbal oils, and ancient home remedies that promise to reverse grey hair in weeks. However, dermatologists advise caution when it comes to these sweeping claims.
According to Dr Veena, "Science does not support the idea that oils, shampoos, or external home remedies can reliably turn grey hair black again. While good hair care and a balanced diet certainly support overall hair health, they cannot revive pigment cells that have permanently stopped functioning. Once these cells are depleted due to the natural ageing process, the follicle loses its ability to produce melanin for good."

Can Stress-Induced Grey Hair Be Reversed?
The link between a stressful life and grey hair has been a part of long stories, but recent studies suggest there is some truth to it. Intense psychological stress can disrupt the way pigment is delivered to the hair follicle.
Speaking about the same Dr Praveen says that interestingly, when stress levels are significantly reduced, some individuals have seen a partial restoration of their hair colour.
"This has led scientists to believe that stress-related greying may, in certain select cases, be reversible. That said, this reversal is neither predictable nor common, and it certainly shouldn't be viewed as a guaranteed 'cure' for grey hair," she further notes.
Dr Veena shares that there is ongoing research into the biology of hair greying, focusing on oxidative stress and cellular protection. Some experimental findings in animal studies have shown promise in protecting follicles at a cellular level, but she also clarifies that these are still very far from becoming proven treatments for humans. For now, the most dependable way to restore a darker shade remains professional hair dye.
Bottomline
As per what Dr Praveen explains, grey hair turning black again is possible only in very limited situations, such as when the cause is a temporary nutritional deficiency or extreme stress. For the vast majority of us, greying is a biological milestone and a normal part of the ageing process. Managing your stress and correcting your diet may help slow the process down, but once the pigment cells have retired, they rarely return to work. Embracing the change, or opting for safe colouring methods, is usually the best way forward.
FAQ
Can grey hair be turned black naturally?
It is only possible if the greying is caused by temporary factors like extreme stress or a lack of vitamins, such as B12 and iron. Once these are fixed, new hair may grow back in its original colour, but age-related grey hair is usually permanent. Is grey hair at 25 normal?
Yes, it can be normal if it is in your genes, but seeing grey hair this early often points to premature greying. It is a good idea to check for nutritional deficiencies or high stress levels, as these are common triggers for young adults.
