For generations, hair oiling has been deeply woven into Indian self-care rituals. According to our mothers and grandmothers, champi sessions promised stronger roots, shinier strands, and a calmer mind. However, if you are dealing with dandruff, you may have heard warnings like, oil makes dandruff worse. So, what is the truth then? Is it possible that oiling the hair leads to more dandruff or is it just another misunderstood beauty myth?
In order to clarify this dichotomy, we consulted our expert, Dr Ruben Bhasin Passi, Consultant Dermatologist at CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram, who explained the science behind dandruff, oiling, and scalp health. Read ahead to find out.
What is Dandruff?
Dandruff is not just dry scalp. Dr Passi mentioned that the main reason is the excessive growth of a yeast fungus called Malassezia, which normally lives on our scalp. “This fungus gets its food from scalp oils, also known as sebum. When it multiplies excessively, it triggers inflammation, itching, and flaking,” she explained. And, this is where the oiling debate begins.
Does Oiling Hair Really Lead to Dandruff?
According To Dr Passi, if it is done wrongly or in excess, it can. “Applying oil heavily to the scalp or keeping it on for a long time can make dandruff worse,” she said. Malassezia is supported by oil so adding more oil to a scalp that is already prone to dandruff is fostering its growth. Hence, this increases flakes, along with itching, and even inflammation.
However, this does not mean that oiling is always bad for hair and worsens dandruff.

When Can Oiling Be Beneficial?
Dr Passi clarified that applying oil on the hair length id different from putting it on the scalp. “Using oil on the mid-lengths and ends helps to avoid the thinning, frizzy and brittle hair without interfering with dandruff,” she said.
In case your scalp does not have an active case of dandruff raging, light and occasional application of oil, followed by proper cleansing, might not be a problem at all. It is all about the methods youre using, how much you are applying and the duration of oiling.

Common Oiling Mistakes That Worsen Dandruff
Many people unknowingly do the things that increase dandruff through their habits. These bad habits may include:
- Putting the oil on the scalp overnight or for one full day
- Using thick, heavy oils frequently
- Massaging aggressively, which can cause irritation to an already sensitive scalp
- Not rinsing the oil thoroughly, thus creating a layer of residue on the scalp
“All these things can lead to the trapping of sweat, dust, and microorganisms on the scalp, thus the worsening of dandruff,” mentioned Dr Passi.

Hair Oil Routine Dermatologists Actually Recommend
If you have dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis, Dr Passi suggested prioritising medicated anti-dandruff shampoos over oiling. Ingredients like ketoconazole, zinc pyrithione, or selenium sulphide help control fungal overgrowth and inflammation, hence, look for them in your hair products.
“Oiling should not be regarded as a substitute for medical treatment of dandruff. Dandruff should be thought of as a condition of the scalp that requires precise treatment, not just provision of nourishment,” she said.
Additionally, if you still enjoy oiling, keep it minimal:
- Take a tiny amount
- Contact the scalp as little as possible
- Remove the oil within 30 to 60 minutes
- Do not oil during flare-ups
Bottomline
Oiling does not directly cause dandruff, but heavy or prolonged scalp oiling can definitely worsen it. If you’re dandruff-prone, focus on treatment first and oil your hair mindfully, away from the scalp. In case of persistent flakes, professional help from a dermatologist is always the best approach to achieving lasting scalp health.
FAQ
1. Should I stop oiling completely if I have dandruff?
Not at all. Just avoid oiling the scalp area when the problem is severe. You can still safely oil the lengths of your hair.2. Which oil is the best for a scalp that is prone to dandruff?
Oils cannot cure dandruff. However, medicated shampoos are more effective than any natural oil.3. Can dry scalp and dandruff be treated the same way?
No. Dry scalp requires moisturising while dandruff requires antifungal treatment, and wrongly identifying them can make the condition worse.
