If you stand in front of a mirror on a hair wash day and observe how you feel, hair thickness is not just a quotient of volume but also confidence. A good hair day can change your mood, while limp, thinning strands can quietly chip away at it. This is when hair oils enter the chat, and among the many oils, two are very common in every hair discussion, including coconut and bhringraj oils. While both are considered effective and traditional, they don't have the same effects. Hence, if the aim is thicker hair, then which one really works?

To have our questions answered, we reached out to our expert, Dr Ruben Bhasin Passi, Consultant Dermatologist at CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram. Read ahead to know what she shared with us.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is frequently the first oil that is introduced to most of us. Dr Passi shared that coconut oil contains fatty acids that are very good and can penetrate deep into the hair shaft. Thus, the hair receives extra nourishment not just on the outside but also on the inside.

"When hair loses protein, it becomes weak, brittle, and will break more often. Coconut oil helps to keep the protein intact, making the strands stronger from inside," Dr Passi said.

Stronger strands don’t break easily. Less breakage means hair grows longer without thinning out at the ends, making the hair appear visibly fuller and healthier over time. If your hair feels dry, rough or damaged from heat styling, colouring, or pollution, coconut oil is a good and slow way to bring back that lost thickness.

However, coconut oil mainly works on the thickness of the strands rather than stimulating the scalp. It will not produce new hair overnight, but it will ensure that the hair that you already have stays with you.

Bhringraj Oil

Bhringraj oil has earned its reputation in Ayurveda as the king of herbs for hair. However, its power is not-so-quietly hidden below the surface. Unlike the soaking-in approach of coconut oil, bringraj oil takes care of the scalp and the roots first and foremost.

Dr Passi said that in the long run, this oil acts like a silent game-changer for those suffering from thinning due to stress, hormonal changes, or weak roots. She said that bhringraj oil contributes to better hair density over time just by nourishing the scalp and improving root health. It does not just give a fuller look to hair, but also helps with better growth.

“Bhringraj oil by itself might not be able to give deep conditioning to the same extent as coconut oil does, particularly if your hair strands are already dry or damaged,” Dr Passi noted.

Hair Thickness vs Density: Understanding the Difference

Hair thickness can mean two different things, which are thicker strands or more hair.  Coconut oil helps with the former, while bhringraj oil supports the latter.

Dr Passi highlighted that coconut oil not only strengthens the hair shaft but also smoothens it, thus giving it a volumising effect. Whereas, bhringraj oil works its magic from the roots by making new growth possible and preventing excessive hair fall due to weak follicles.

Coconut Oil vs Bhringraj Oil: Which Is Better for Hair Thickness?

Dr Passi advised not to take sides and to employ both methods. Coconut oil can be a rich source of nourishment, while bhringraj-infused oil can deal with scalp health problems.

“This combination creates an equilibrium between the advantages that come with using the two oils together, which includes stronger strands, healthier roots, and, with time, hair that is not only thicker but also feels stronger.”

Bottomline

Coconut oil improves hair strand thickness and reduces breakage, while bhringraj oil strengthens roots and supports healthy hair growth. Experts suggest that for the best results, use them together.
