Why a Dermatologist Says That Winter is Laser Season, Read On To Know More

Winter is considered the ideal time to invest in self-care. It is beneficial for long-term skincare procedures such as laser hair removal. If you are imagining yourself smooth and hairless at the beach in the summer, rocking your favourite outfits, starting laser treatment during the cold season will make your dreams come true.

Yes, winter months are considered best suited for laser skin treatments as the colder temperatures make the treatments more effective while delivering the best possible results and relaxation. To gain insights about why winter is the best time for laser treatments, the editorial team of Onlymyhealth spoke to Dr Vishakha Dhorde, Consultant Dermatologist at Kaya Limited. Read ahead to know what she said:

Laser Treatment For Skin: What Is It?

Laser Skin Treatment, or laser skin resurfacing, is basically using high-intensity light beams to treat your skin problems. Many people opt for laser treatments to reduce fine lines, wrinkles, stretch marks, or to remove tattoos, moles and other scars on the skin.

During the discussion, Dr Vishakha Dhorde shared, “A laser is a skin-resurfacing modality that improves skin tone, texture, and colouration by utilising the power of light and heat. The results are achieved by causing controlled damage in the tissue that stimulates the body to have a healing reaction that makes it appear better.”

When you train, you purposely produce microscopic tears in your muscles, which heal back stronger. Lasers function in the same way. Doctors use light and heat energy to induce controlled damage to the surface of the skin, such that your body reacts to heal the tissue by generating new skin. As a result, one gets the increased production of collagen, which eventually results in glowing and youthful skin.

Laser Skin Treatment And Winter

If you have been exploring your options for laser treatments, then December to February is the perfect time to begin your treatment package. Dr Dhorde explained that the laser works best when there is a clear contrast between light skin and dark hair, and this increases the chances of better laser results for Indian skin tone. “Since the sun isn’t as visible in the winter, you will be less tanned, and your skin is also naturally lighter,” the dermatologist further added. In this way, the laser concentrates more precisely on the darker pigment of the hair follicles, and the result is more satisfying.

Because of the cold, there is also very little post-laser sensitivity, which generally peaks in summer months, and the skin remains calm. With several benefits backed by science, winter is the ideal season to jump on the laser bandwagon for that smooth and glowing skin.

Reduced Sun Exposure

The reduced exposure to sunlight is one of the strongest arguments for starting laser hair removal and other laser skin treatments in the winter. Reports suggest that UV rays lead to increased melanin production in the body, which not only causes uneven skin tone but also disturbs the tissues’ healing process.

During cold temperatures, one automatically tends to stay indoors away from sun exposure, which saves you from a number of problems like hyperpigmentation, redness, and sweating. These factors contribute to slowing down the healing of tissues required for your desired result after laser treatment.

Skin Treatment

Dr Dhorde mentioned, “The laser targets the pigment within the hair follicle, and after each session, the treated skin becomes susceptible to UV damage. Excessive sun exposure might lead to discomfort or uneven pigmentation, which can affect the treatment’s effectiveness.”

Wintertime brings less intense sunlight, which helps the skin heal more quickly. Layered clothing during this season also covers most of the skin, offering you extra protection from the sun.

The Advantage Of Time

During winter, most of the skin remains covered, but in summer, it is exposed more often. Laser treatment works on patches and needs numerous sessions that take place over a few weeks to target hair in its active growth period. It is possible to complete the necessary sessions before summer if the treatment is started in the winter.

“Scheduling your treatments in winter implies that by spring, your hair growth will be decreased, and you will just require little upkeep,” Dr Dhorde noted.

Bottomline

In the modern generation, laser treatments have become a common procedure among people to keep their skin glowing and youthful. Winter months not only give you desired results with less risk of side effects but also come as a perfect juncture to get your procedure done by spring to wear your favourite outfit.
