The pollution levels in the country have risen dramatically, leading to the increase of several health conditions like asthma, pneumonia, eye conditions, cardiovascular diseases, lung cancer, etc. The health complications increase two-fold when pollution inside our homes caters to this eventually increasing the rate of mortality and morbidity. This can be caused due to regular household chores like burning firewood, coal, or other fuels for cooking or heating, which releases harmful pollutants in the air. This article lists the causes and ways to reduce air pollution at home.

What Is Indoor Air Pollution?

Indoor pollution refers to the emission of harmful pollutants inside your home. The air inside your home becomes polluted as it can quickly become stagnant. It can affect your health severely as the amount of time spent at home is relatively higher. 

Causes Of Indoor Air Pollution

There are many causes that can raise air pollution in your homes. Some of them are as follows:

Tobacco Smoke

The smoke emitted from cigarettes, vapes, pipes, cigars, etc is one of the most significant causes of household air pollution. It increases the chances of developing cardiovascular diseases or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. 

Household Products

Household products like paints, cleaning agents and disinfectants, air fresheners, candles, glues and solvents can add to the pollution inside your home. It can cause various health diseases like asthma and respiratory infections. This is because of the presence of volatile organic compounds in these household products. 

Mould

Mould is a fungus or indoor air pollutant that can lead to developing health conditions like asthma, allergies, and respiratory infections. They grow in damp and humid environments and can be found on walls, ceilings, and basements of your house.

Ways To Improve The Quality Of Air Around You

Some of the ways that can help in reducing indoor pollution are as follows:

HEPA Filters

You can install high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters to reduce air pollution inside your homes. It can be used in vacuums, heating and air conditioning, air purifiers, etc. In addition, you should also minimise the use of air fresheners inside your homes.

Proper Ventilation

You should ensure that your house is ventilated correctly to remove the polluted air and replace it with fresh air. Inadequate ventilation can lead to health conditions like headaches, fatigue, dizziness, etc.

Avoid Smoking

You should avoid smoking, especially inside your home, as it increases the chances of respiratory diseases and lung cancer. 

Remove Carpeting

You should remove or try to minimise carpeting as it can store pollutants like mould spores, dust mites, etc and increase the chances of developing health conditions like asthma and coughs.

Keep Your Trash Covered

You should keep the trash at your home covered to keep your home free of insects and pests. 

Prevent Odours And Avoid Scent At Homes

You should avoid using scented air candles at home as it causes air pollution due to the presence of carcinogenic substances in them. You should opt for natural beeswax instead.

Household Air Plants

You can place household air plants to reduce the impact of air pollution at home. Some plants that can be kept indoors to minimise air pollution are spider plants, peace lilies, Boston ferns, etc.
