There is a common notion that you need to cleanse your skin till it feels ‘squeaky clean’. But little do people know that over-cleansing your skin can damage its barrier. And once the natural protective barrier is compromised, it can harm your skin in more ways than one. Today, this article will explain how over-cleansing can affect your skin barrier, signs you are over-cleansing, and tips to do it the right way without hampering your skin health.
To understand this better, we reached out to Dr Ruben Bhasin Passi, Senior Consultant, Dermatology, CK Birla Hospital, Gurgaon.
Can Over-Cleansing Damage Your Skin Barrier?
Let us right away address the main question: can over-cleansing damage the barrier of your skin? Answering this, Dr Passi says, “Washing the face is one of the most basic steps in skincare. Yet, dermatologists often see people taking the idea of ‘clean skin’ too far. Repeated washing, harsh cleansers and aggressive scrubbing may leave the skin feeling exceptionally clean but can also interfere with its natural protective barrier.”
The expert further explains, “The skin barrier helps keep moisture inside the skin while protecting it from external irritants. When this barrier becomes compromised, the skin can become dry, tight, flaky, red or unusually sensitive.
What Are The Signs of Over-cleansing?
So how can you understand whether you are over-cleansing your skin or not? Dr Passi says that the skin can provide several clues. “Persistent tightness immediately after washing, excessive dryness, flaking, redness, burning or increased sensitivity may indicate that the cleansing routine is too harsh,” says the expert.
She adds, “Another misconception is that skin should feel ‘squeaky clean’ after washing. That sensation may actually indicate that too much oil has been removed.”
So how much cleansing is too much? Answering this, Dr Passi says, “For many people, cleansing the face once or twice a day is sufficient. A morning cleanse may be useful for some skin types, while cleansing at night is particularly important for removing sunscreen, makeup, sweat, pollution and accumulated products. People with very dry or sensitive skin may not need a strong cleanser every morning. Their routine may be adjusted according to their skin’s needs.”

Does Oily Skin Need More Washing?
There is a common belief that oily skin requires more cleansing. Is this a reality or a myth? Answering this, Dr Passi says, “Not necessarily. People with oily or acne-prone skin sometimes wash their face repeatedly because they believe removing oil will prevent pimples.”
The expert continues, “However, excessive cleansing can irritate the skin and may make it feel even more uncomfortable. Acne is not simply caused by ‘dirty skin’, and repeatedly washing the face cannot remove the underlying causes of acne.”

Tips To Cleanse Without Damaging The Skin
On this note, Dr Passi shares some effective tips to cleanse your face without over-doing it and damaging the barrier:
- A gentle, non-abrasive cleanser is generally preferable to harsh soaps or scrubs.
- The face can be washed with lukewarm rather than very hot water, followed by gentle patting with a towel instead of vigorous rubbing.
- A moisturiser should be applied after cleansing when needed, particularly if the skin feels dry.
- People using acne medications, retinoids or exfoliating products may need to be especially careful because these treatments can already make the skin more sensitive.
What about facial scrubs? Answering this, the expert says, “Physical scrubbing is not automatically harmful, but aggressive scrubbing can cause irritation, particularly in sensitive or acne-prone skin. The skin does not need to be scrubbed until it feels completely smooth. Exfoliation, when required, should be chosen according to the individual’s skin type and introduced gradually.”

Is ‘More Clean, More Healthy’ a Skincare Myth?
Dr Passi says that cleanliness and skin health are not the same thing. “The objective of cleansing is to remove unwanted substances while preserving the skin’s protective functions. A simple routine that cleanses appropriately, moisturises when needed and protects the skin from the sun is often more sustainable than repeatedly stripping the skin,” she answers.
The expert further explains, “If someone develops persistent burning, redness, cracking or significant dryness despite changing their cleansing routine, a dermatologist can determine whether there is an underlying skin condition or barrier problem.”
“The healthiest skin is not necessarily the skin that has been washed the most. It is skin whose natural protective balance has been respected,” concludes Dr Passi.

Conclusion
A consistent cleansing routine is important for removing daily buildup on the skin. However, chasing a ‘squeaky clean’ feeling after every wash often does more harm than good by stripping your skin's protective barrier. To maintain your skin health, limit washing or cleansing to once or twice a day, use lukewarm water and a gentle, non-abrasive cleanser. This can keep your skin healthy and preserve its natural moisture balance, instead of aggressively scrubbing away the moisture.
