Dr Chaudhary said, “Peppermint contains menthol, a compound known for its soothing properties and ability to relax the muscles of the respiratory tract. This makes peppermint an excellent natural remedy for respiratory conditions, such as asthma, bronchitis, and congestion. The menthol in peppermint helps to open up the airways, making it easier to breathe and promoting better airflow to the lungs.”

“Also, peppermint has antimicrobial properties that can help fight off infections and reduce inflammation in the respiratory system. This can be especially beneficial for individuals with chronic respiratory conditions or those prone to respiratory infections”, added Dr Chaudhary. Peppermint can help improve lung function and overall respiratory health by keeping the lungs clear of mucus and reducing inflammation.

How to Use Peppermint for Lung Cleansing

There are several ways to add peppermint into your daily routine to support lung health. Here are some ways listed by Dr Chaudhary:

Peppermint Tea

One of the simplest and most effective ways to enjoy the benefits of peppermint is by drinking peppermint tea. Peppermint tea is not only soothing and refreshing but also helps to clear the airways and promote respiratory health. Simply steep a few fresh or dried peppermint leaves in hot water for 5-10 minutes, then strain and enjoy.

Peppermint Inhalation

Another effective way to use peppermint for lung cleansing is through inhalation. According to a comparative study by the American Journal of Rhinology, menthol in peppermint enhances the sensation of airflow in the nasal passages. Consequently, inhaling steam from peppermint tea may create a sensation of improved breathing comfort.

Add a few drops of peppermint essential oil to a bowl of hot water and inhale the steam for 5-10 minutes. Alternatively, you can add a few drops of peppermint oil to a diffuser and inhale the aroma throughout the day. Inhalation of peppermint oil can help clear congestion, reduce inflammation, and promote easier breathing.

Peppermint Chest Rub

You can even consider making a homemade peppermint chest rub for targeted relief of respiratory symptoms. Dr Chaudhary added, “Mix a few drops of peppermint essential oil with a carrier oil, such as coconut or almond oil, then massage onto the chest and upper back. This soothing chest rub can help relieve congestion, ease coughing, and promote clearer breathing.”

Peppermint Bath

If you are looking to relax and unwind while supporting lung health, look no further than a peppermint bath. All you need to do is add a few drops of peppermint essential oil to your bathwater. The steam from the warm bath will help to open up the airways, while the soothing aroma of peppermint will promote relaxation and stress relief.

Peppermint Dietary Supplements

“If you prefer, you can also take peppermint supplements, capsules or tablets. These supplements contain concentrated doses of peppermint extract and can be taken daily to support respiratory health and overall well-being”, said Dr Chaudhary.
