Heartburn: Ayurvedic Remedies To Prevent It

Heartburn is characterised by a burning sensation in the chest or throat, can be alleviated and prevented through Ayurvedic remedies. Heartburn is a symptom of acid reflux, which occurs when stomach contents flow back up into the oesophagus, or food pipe. In an interaction with Only My Health, Dr Ganesh Chaudhary, Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS), PHC, Darbhanga, Bihar, explains about some Ayurvedic strategies to help prevent heartburn.

1. Dietary Modifications

Avoid Spicy and Acidic Foods: Limit consumption of spicy, acidic, and fried foods, which can aggravate heartburn symptoms.Include Cooling Foods: Incorporate cooling and soothing foods into your diet, such as cucumber, coconut water, fennel seeds, coriander, and mint. These foods help balance excess heat and acidity in the body.

2. Herbal Remedies

“Amla is a potent Ayurvedic herb known for its digestive benefits. Consuming amla juice or powder can help soothe the stomach lining and reduce acidity. Licorice root has demulcent properties that coat the stomach lining and protect it from acid irritation. Drink licorice tea or chew on licorice root sticks to alleviate heartburn,” said Dr Chaudhary.

3. Lifestyle Practices

Eat Mindfully: Practice mindful eating by chewing food thoroughly and avoiding overeating, which can put pressure on the stomach and increase the risk of acid reflux.

Maintain a Healthy Weight: Excess weight, especially around the abdomen, can put pressure on the stomach and increase the risk of acid reflux. Aim to maintain a healthy weight through regular exercise and a balanced diet.

4. Ayurvedic Formulations

According to Dr Chaushary, triphala, a blend of three Ayurvedic fruits (amla, haritaki, and bibhitaki), is commonly used to promote digestive health. Take triphala churna with warm water before bedtime to support healthy digestion and prevent heartburn.

“Avipattikar churna is an Ayurvedic formulation that helps balance excess acidity in the stomach. Take 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of avipattikar churna with warm water after meals to alleviate heartburn and promote digestion,” Dr Chaudhary stated.

5. Digestive Health Practices

Practice Stress Management: Chronic stress can exacerbate digestive issues, including heartburn. Incorporate stress-reducing practices such as yoga, meditation, deep breathing exercises, and regular relaxation into your daily routine.

Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to help maintain proper hydration and support digestion. Sip warm water or herbal teas, such as chamomile or ginger tea, to soothe the stomach and alleviate heartburn.
