Summers come with bright sunshine and scorching heat leading to several heat-related health problems. However, apart from these issues, summer is infamously known as ‘Allergy Season’ as allergens such as pollen and mold flourish in warm weather. Due to the exposure to these allergens, there is a rise in cases of conjunctivitis or pink eye.
Conjunctivitis causes burning sensation, red eyes, and a watery discharge. In this, your eyes look pink as the membrane that covers the sclera, the white part of your eye, is inflamed. Being a contagious disease, conjunctivitis is a super spreader and thus, it is important to understand how to manage it and take care of your eyes.
To understand what pink eye is and how an infected person can manage it, OnlyMyHealth team interacted with Dr Rakhi Agarwal BAMS (Ayurveda) and MS ophthalmology, Shree Ram Eye Hospital, Shirpur, Maharashtra.
What is Conjunctivitis?
Defining conjunctivitis, Dr Agarwal said, “It can be caused by viruses, bacteria, or allergies, and self-treating can be risky. It can be difficult to tell the difference between viral, bacterial, and allergic conjunctivitis without a doctor's examination. Each type requires different treatment.”

Treating Conjunctivitis
Practising home remedies and taking over-the-counter medicines is one of the most common practices done in India but it can turn out to be harmful. Warning, Dr Agarwal said, “Using the wrong medication, like over-the-counter redness relievers, can worsen some types of conjunctivitis. When left untreated, some forms of conjunctivitis can lead to serious complications like corneal ulcers, which can affect vision.”
According to her, conjunctivitis is mainly a self limiting disease. Even if no medicine is given, it gets cured within 7-15 days. But there are some strains of conjunctivitis which need medicines. “In such a case, some mild steroids eye drops which cure conjunctivitis. Sometimes, if the pain is severe, some painkillers and antibiotics are also needed,” Dr Agarwal added.
