The liver is one of the body's vital organs, responsible for various essential functions, including detoxification, metabolism, and digestion. Therefore, it is essential to maintain optimal liver health to promote overall well-being. We spoke to our expert Dr Ganesh Chaudhary, Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS), PHC, Darbhanga, Bihar, who listed ways to take care of your liver with the help of ayurveda.
Dr Chaudhary said, “In ayurveda, the liver is associated with the ‘Pitta’ dosha, which governs digestion and metabolism. Liver problems can manifest in various ways, from fatty liver disease and hepatitis to cirrhosis and jaundice. These issues often result from factors like poor dietary choices, excessive alcohol consumption, or exposure to environmental toxins.”
According to StatPearls, cirrhosis represents an advanced phase of prolonged liver disease, leading to the disturbance of liver structure, the development of extensive nodules, vascular reconfiguration, the growth of new blood vessels, and the accumulation of extracellular matrix.
Ayurvedic Herbs for Liver Health
Dr Chaudhary added, “Ayurveda provides a holistic perspective on liver health, addressing not only the physical symptoms but also the underlying imbalances in the body.” He listed ayurvedic herbs to promote liver health as follows:
Bhumyamalaki (Phyllanthus niruri)
This herb is also known as the ‘stone breaker’ and supports liver function and helps protect against liver diseases. It aids in detoxification and is often used to prevent and manage hepatitis.
Kutki (Picrorhiza kurroa)
Kutki is well-known for its hepatoprotective properties. It helps strengthen the liver, improves digestion, and supports the elimination of toxins from the body.
Turmeric (Curcuma longa)
The curcumin in turmeric is a potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compound that can help reduce inflammation and protect the liver from damage.

Ayurvedic Remedies for Liver Problems

- Lifestyle Adjustments: Dr Chaudhary added, “Ayurveda encourages a balanced, healthy lifestyle that includes regular exercise, adequate sleep, and stress management. This holistic approach can have a significant impact on liver health.”
Consultation and Caution
Dr Chaudhary advised, “It's essential to consult with an ayurvedic practitioner before starting any herbal treatment, as individual body types and imbalances can vary. Also, if you have an existing liver condition or are taking medication, consult your healthcare provider to ensure that ayurvedic remedies are safe and compatible with your current treatment plan.”
