Alopecia, a condition characterised by hair loss, can be emotionally challenging for those affected. While there are various treatment options available, the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda offers a holistic approach to addressing alopecia.
According to Yale Medicine, alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease that affects almost two out of 100 people and recurs even after many mainstream treatments like using steroids. Fortunately, in such a case, ayurvedic herbs can help rescue you. To know about their benefits and ways to use these herbs to treat alopecia, the team of OnlyMyHealth spoke to Dr Ganesh Chaudhary, Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery, PHC, Darbhanga, Bihar.
Alopecia Treatment
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, alopecia causes recurring patchy hair loss and can manifest in different forms, such as alopecia areata (localised hair loss), alopecia totalis (total scalp hair loss), or alopecia universalis (total body hair loss). Factors like genetics, autoimmune issues, and environmental influences contribute to the development of alopecia.
“Ayurveda is an ancient system of medicine in which we view health as a harmonious balance between the body, mind, and spirit. When it comes to alopecia addressing imbalances within the body can promote hair regrowth,” said Dr Chaudhary. He listed several Ayurvedic herbs which have the potential to treat alopecia:
- Bhringraj: Known as the ‘king of herbs for hair,’ Bhringraj can nourish hair follicles, strengthen hair roots, and prevent premature greying. It is commonly used in hair oils and herbal formulations.
- Amla: Rich in antioxidants and vitamin C, Amla helps improve blood circulation to the scalp, promoting hair growth. It is a key ingredient in many Ayurvedic hair tonics.
- Ashwagandha: Stress is a known contributor to alopecia, and Ashwagandha is revered in Ayurveda for its adaptogenic properties, helping the body cope with stress and potentially reducing hair loss.
- Neem: Neem is renowned for its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. It is believed to cleanse the scalp, addressing underlying issues that may contribute to hair loss.
- Aloe Vera: While not a herb, Aloe Vera's soothing and hydrating properties make it a common ingredient in Ayurvedic hair care. It helps maintain a healthy scalp environment for hair growth.
Ayurvedic Herbs For Hair Care
According to the National Aloepecia Areata Foundation, close to 2% of people will experience alopecia areata at some point in their lifetime, which amounts to almost 160 million people worldwide.
In the majority of cases, this disease manifests at a later stage in life. As per a study conducted by researchers from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, 80% of people with alopecia areata will show signs of the disease before age 40, and 40% experience symptoms by age 20.
To help people treat their alopecia using ayurvedic herbs, Dr Chaudhary listed ways by which you can use them:
- Herbal Oils: Massage Bhringraj or Amla oil into your scalp regularly to nourish hair follicles.
- Herbal Hair Masks: Create a hair mask using a blend of Ayurvedic herbs like Amla, Neem, and Bhringraj for a potent treatment.
- Ayurvedic Supplements: Consider Ayurvedic supplements containing Ashwagandha or Amla to address internal imbalances.
While alopecia can be a complex and multifaceted condition, Ayurvedic herbs offer a natural and holistic approach to hair care. By incorporating these herbs into your routine and embracing Ayurvedic principles, you can nurture your locks from within, potentially promoting hair regrowth and maintaining healthy, lustrous hair. As always, consult with a healthcare professional or Ayurvedic practitioner before making significant changes to your routine.
