There has been an increasing rise in the cholesterol levels of people due to their unhealthy diet and lifestyle. If not managed timely, it can lead to heart disease, stroke, and other health problems. The good news is that you can manage your cholesterol by adding ayurvedic herbs to your diet. They offer a natural and holistic approach to managing cholesterol levels, addressing not only the physical but also the mental and social aspects of well-being. We spoke to our expert Dr Ganesh Chaudhary, Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS), PHC, Darbhanga, Bihar, who listed ayurvedic herbs to reduce cholesterol levels in blood.
Understanding Cholesterol and Its Implications
“Cholesterol is a fatty substance crucial for various bodily functions, but an excess of it, particularly Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, can lead to health problems. Elevated cholesterol levels are a significant risk factor for heart disease”, said Dr Chaudhary.
Ayurvedic Herbs for Lowering Cholesterol
Guggul
“Guggul has been a staple in ayurvedic medicine for centuries, renowned for its ability to lower cholesterol levels. It contains compounds that stimulate the thyroid, enhancing metabolism and promoting the elimination of excess cholesterol”, added Dr Chaudhary.
Arjuna
Arjuna is well known for its cardioprotective properties and is commonly used in ayurveda to support heart health. It helps regulate blood pressure and lower cholesterol, making it a valuable ally in preventing cardiovascular diseases.
Turmeric
According to Nutrition Journal, the potential protective effects of turmeric and curcumin on individuals at risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) may involve the enhancement of serum lipid levels. Dr Chaudhary added, “Turmeric aids in reducing LDL cholesterol levels and preventing the oxidation of cholesterol, mitigating the risk of atherosclerosis.”
Triphala
Triphala is a combination of three fruits: Amalaki, Bibhitaki, and Haritaki, helping detoxify the body and regulate cholesterol levels, contributing to overall cardiovascular health.
Ashwagandha
Ashwagandha functions as an adaptogenic herb, aiding the body in managing stress and enhancing overall vitality. According to a study spanning 30 days with 18 participants conducted by the Journal of Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine, the consumption of diverse doses, reaching up to 1 gram per day, resulted in noteworthy decreases in total cholesterol compared to their initial baseline measurements.
Garlic
Garlic is a well-known herb with multiple health benefits, including its ability to lower cholesterol. “Allicin, the active compound in garlic, has been shown to reduce cholesterol levels and improve heart health”, informed Dr Chaudhary.
