According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), diabetic eye disease includes a range of eye complications that individuals with diabetes may experience. These conditions comprise diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular oedema, cataracts, and glaucoma. With time, diabetes can inflict harm on your eyes, potentially resulting in diminished vision or complete blindness.

Dr Chaudhary said, “Imbalances in Pitta dosha, aggravated by factors, such as unhealthy diet, stress, and poor lifestyle habits, can manifest as eye disorders and vision problems. Ayurvedic treatments aim to restore balance to the doshas, enhance ocular health, and promote overall well-being.”

Maintain Healthy Blood Sugar Levels

Balancing blood sugar levels is crucial for preventing and reversing eye damage caused by diabetes. Dr Chaudhary said, “Follow a balanced diet rich in fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins while minimising the intake of sugary and processed foods. Add ayurvedic herbs like bitter melon, fenugreek, and cinnamon into your diet to help regulate blood sugar levels naturally.”

Practice Eye Exercises

Regular eye exercises can strengthen the eye muscles, improve circulation, and alleviate strain and fatigue. “Try simple techniques like palming, eye rotations, and focusing exercises to relax the eyes and enhance visual acuity. Ayurvedic eye exercises, known as 'Netra Vyayama' are designed to promote eye health and clarity of vision”, added Dr Chaudhary.

According to a multicenter study by Ophthalmology Glaucoma, higher levels of exercise intensity are linked to a reduced likelihood of developing glaucoma.
