A 100-gram serving of mangoes provides approximately 60-70 calories, making it a relatively low-calorie fruit compared to other tropical fruits.

1) Digestive Issues
According to Delhi-based dietician Priya Bansal, MSc Nutrition, formerly worked at Apollo Hospital, Delhi, "Overeating mangoes can lead to digestive problems, primarily due to their high fibre content." Consuming excessive fibre can cause bloating, gas, abdominal cramps, and even diarrhoea. It is essential to consume mangoes in moderation, especially if you have a history of poor digestion, she added.

2) Weight Gain
Despite being low in calories, overeating mangoes can contribute to weight gain. Bansal stated that their sweet and indulgent flavour can make it easy to consume large quantities, leading to an excess calorie intake. Moderation is key to enjoying mangoes without sabotaging your weight management goals.
3) Allergic Reactions
Bansal said that overeating mangoes can increase the likelihood of triggering an allergic reaction, characterised by symptoms like itching, swelling, hives, or even anaphylaxis in severe cases. If you experience any adverse symptoms after consuming mangoes, seek medical attention immediately.
4) Blood Sugar Spikes
Mangoes have a high glycemic index, meaning they can cause a rapid rise in blood sugar levels when consumed in excess. This can be problematic for individuals with diabetes or those who are insulin resistant. Bansal advised having it after a workout or a physical activity as it would help in filling the glycogen reserve and reduce the effect of insulin spikes.
5) Vitamin A Toxicity
Mangoes are an excellent source of vitamin A, but excessive consumption can lead to an overabundance of this nutrient in the body, resulting in a condition called hypervitaminosis A. Symptoms of vitamin A toxicity include dizziness, nausea, blurred vision, and even hair loss.
6) Interference With Medications
Bansal emphasised that mangoes contain compounds called furanocoumarins, which can interfere with certain medications, particularly those metabolised by the liver. If you are taking medications such as statins or antihistamines, consult your doctor to determine if mango consumption could pose any risks or require dosage adjustments.

7) Oral Irritation
The peel of mangoes contains a substance called urushiol, which is also found in poison ivy and poison oak. Some individuals may experience irritation or an itchy sensation in their mouth or on their lips after eating mangoes. "Peeling and thoroughly washing mangoes can help minimise this risk, Bansal concluded.
