Are you dealing with unexplained fatigue which bothers you every day? It may affect your daily activities, hamper your sleep, and may even lead to brain fog. It’s time you avoid ignoring these symptoms as they may indicate a health condition known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). It is a condition characterised by excessive exhaustion or fatigue that does not subside with rest and cannot be attributed to an underlying medical condition. We spoke to Dr Shivaram Rao K, Consultant Neuro Physician, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad, who explained this condition, its symptoms, causes, and management measures.
What Is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome?
“Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), also known as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), is a complex and debilitating condition characterised by persistent and unexplained fatigue lasting for at least six months”, informed Dr Rao.
According to research by the Nuffield Department of Women's and Reproductive Health, CFS/ME is a multi-organ, life-altering disease that presents with a variety of symptoms, some of which are unique to each patient. Therefore, it may be challenging to diagnose the illness due to the complexity of the symptoms.

Symptoms Of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Dr Rao listed symptoms of CFS that you should watch out for:
- Profound exhaustion
- Impaired memory
- Concentration (often referred to as ‘brain fog’)
- Unrefreshing sleep
- Muscle pain
Cause Of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
According to the Office on Women's Health (OASH), CFS can affect anyone, although it is more prevalent among women in their 40s and 50s. Also, women are two to four times more likely to be diagnosed with this condition as compared to men. The exact cause of CFS/ME remains elusive, however, some factors may be considered as potential triggers. Dr Rao listed them as:
- Viral infections
- Immune system dysfunction
- Hormonal imbalances
Dr Rao added, “A combination of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors may contribute to its onset.” According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), CFS may represent the culmination of several distinct illnesses rather than being a single illness.

How To Manage Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Since every person experiences symptoms differently, managing the disorder and relieving symptoms may include varying approaches to treatment. Managing CFS requires a comprehensive strategy that involves a multidisciplinary approach. Dr Rao shared the management strategies as follows:
- Symptom Alleviation: Treatment primarily aims to alleviate symptoms and enhance the overall quality of life for individuals with CFS/ME. Lifestyle modifications, such as including a balanced diet, pacing activities, and stress management, play essential roles in symptom management.
- Medications: They may be prescribed to manage specific symptoms, such as pain, sleep disturbances, and depression.
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): CBT is commonly employed to address the psychological aspects of CFS/ME. It focuses on modifying negative thought patterns and behaviours.
- Graded Exercise Therapy (GET): Another common approach is GET, which involves gradually increasing physical activity levels. However, these therapies are controversial, and some patients report symptom exacerbation.
- Rest is Crucial: Both physical and mental rest play a crucial role in managing CFS/ME.
Bottomline
Dr Rao concluded, “As understanding of CFS/ME continues to evolve, personalised treatment plans are crucial. Ongoing research aims to unravel the complexities of the condition, paving the way for more effective interventions and improved outcomes for individuals grappling with this challenging syndrome.”
