While fever is a natural defence mechanism of the body that helps kill pathogens that have entered the body and causing disease, high fever may not be so helpful. High fever can be a challenging experience, which is not just uncomfortable but also life-threatening. 

Harvard Medical School defines high fever as a body temperature between 102.4 and 105.8 F (39.1 to 41 C). According to Cancer Research UK, if a person suffers from such a high fever for an extended period, it could cause them to have heart problems and neurological damage, and has also exhibited seizures in children,

While conventional medicines help lower fever and other associated symptoms, a natural approach like Ayurvedic remedies can strengthen the body from within and help lower body temperature naturally. Talking to the OnlyMyHealth team, Dr Ganesh Chaudhary, Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery, PHC, Darbhanga, Bihar, recommended some Ayurvedic remedies to help lower high fever safely and naturally.

Ayurvedic Remedies for High Fever

In Ayurveda, high fever is often seen as a result of an imbalance in the body's doshas, particularly Pitta and Kapha. Dr Chaudhary explained, "Fever is a sign of aggravated Pitta dosha, indicating excess heat and inflammation in the body. Balancing Pitta and supporting the body's natural cooling mechanisms are key in fever management."

Coriander and Cumin Tea

His first recommendation is coriander and cumin tea. "Coriander and cumin seeds have cooling properties that help reduce fever and inflammation," he said. "Drinking this tea regularly can also help to detoxify the body and strengthen your well-being from within.”

Ginger and Tulsi Decoction

Dr Chaudhary recommends, "Ginger's anti-inflammatory properties combined with Tulsi's immune-boosting benefits make this decoction effective in lowering fever and supporting immune health," both of which are crucial when managing a fever or fighting off a pathogen like virus or bacteria.

Neem Leaves Paste

"Neem is known for its cooling and antibacterial properties," explained Dr Chaudhary, "Applying a neem leaves paste on the forehead can help reduce fever and alleviate discomfort."

Triphala Powder with Honey

"Triphala promotes digestion and helps detoxify the body," said Dr Chaudhary. He advised that honey also helps with digestion and strengthening immunity, which can help alleviate discomfort during high fever. 

Pitta-Pacifying Diet

"During fever, it's essential to consume foods that pacify Pitta dosha," advised Dr Chaudhary. He listed a few cooling foods that can help lower body temperature naturally and reduce inflammation:

  • Cucumber
  • Watermelon
  • Coconut Water
  • A salad of raw green leafy vegetables
  • Room temperature yoghurt
  • Celery
  • Mint
  • Berries like blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries

Ayurvedic Herbs

Dr Chaudhary also recommended herbs like Giloy, Amla, and Ashwagandha are known for their immune-boosting and fever-reducing properties. However, he stressed that you should “consult an Ayurvedic practitioner for personalised guidance."
