Ayurvedic Remedies To Alleviate HMPV-Like Symptoms Naturally

Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus that often mimics the common cold symptoms. While most cases result in mild discomfort, the virus can sometimes cause more severe complications, such as pneumonia or asthma and even Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). With the virus scare resurfacing, there is one way to turn–Ayurveda. If you are seeking natural and holistic ways to manage HMPV-Like symptoms, Ayurveda offers time-tested remedies that can enhance immunity and promote respiratory health.

We spoke to our expert, Dr Anupam Anand, Department of General Medicine, Sharda Hospital - Noida, and asked him to explain Ayurvedic remedies to ease HMPV-like symptoms naturally. Here is what he shared with us.

HMPV Through An Ayurvedic Lens

Dr Anand explained, “In Ayurveda, respiratory illnesses are often associated with imbalances in the Kapha and Vata doshas. Kapha imbalance may lead to mucus build-up and congestion, while Vata imbalance can cause dryness and irritation in the respiratory tract. Addressing these imbalances with appropriate remedies and lifestyle modifications can support the body's natural healing process.”

Key Ayurvedic Remedies

Here are the key Ayurvedic remedies to treat these symptoms naturally:

Herbal Teas for Respiratory Relief

1. Tulsi (Holy Basil)

Tulsi is known for its antiviral and immune-boosting properties. Regularly consuming tulsi tea can help alleviate respiratory congestion and improve overall immunity.

2. Ginger

Ginger is a natural anti-inflammatory food item which is long celebrated to calm the throat down. Ginger tea hence, can soothe a sore throat and reduce mucus production.

3. Licorice Root (Mulethi)

Mulethi is an excellent herb for calming throat irritation and reducing coughing spells. Thus, if you feel itchy or sore throat this is a considerable option.

How to Use: Boil one teaspoon of your chosen herb in a cup of water for 5-10 minutes. Strain and drink warm 2-3 times daily.

2. Nasya Therapy (Nasal Oil Application)

Nasya therapy involves the application of herbal oils to the nasal passages, helping to clear congestion and improve respiratory function. Here’s how you can incorporate this in two easy steps:

Since the COVID-19 days, we know that steam inhalation helps loosen mucus and alleviate nasal congestion. Hence, in order to clear the passage add a few drops of eucalyptus oil or camphor to hot water and inhale the steam for 5-10 minutes. Expert suggests covering your head with a towel to maximise the effect.

4. Chyawanprash

Chyawanprash is a traditional Ayurvedic jam made from Amla (Indian gooseberry) and other herbs. It is a powerhouse of Vitamin C and antioxidants that strengthen immunity and improve lung function. Dr Anand suggested taking one teaspoon daily, preferably in the morning.

Lifestyle Practices For Recovery From HMPV-Like Symptoms

Here are a few expert-approved lifestyle practices for a speedy recovery:

1. Pranayama (Breathing Exercises)

Breathing exercises like Nadi Shodhana (alternate nostril breathing) and Bhastrika (bellows breath) can enhance lung capacity and clear the respiratory passages. Practice these techniques for 10-15 minutes daily.

2. Warm Salt Water Gargling

Gargling with warm salt water helps soothe a sore throat and reduce bacterial or viral loads in the oral cavity. Mix half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and gargle 2-3 times daily.

3. Hydration and Rest

Adequate hydration helps thin mucus, making it easier to expel. Aim to drink warm water or herbal teas throughout the day. You can also combine this with ample rest to allow the body to recover fully.
